Veterans Day: Celebrating Vets at Douglas Elliman

by ELLIMAN INSIDER TEAM

November 2025

In celebration of Veterans Day, we invited members of the Douglas Elliman community who have served in the armed forces to reflect on how their service experiences have shaped their lives and careers in the real estate business.

Thank you for your service!

Several members of the Elliman community honored family members who have served and shared stories of their connection to the military.

Roslyn, NY-based agent Louis Fisher wrote about his father, a decorated World War II veteran who was the only survivor when his Jeep was blown up at the Battle of the Bulge. “After playing dead for three days, he was picked up by the Americans after the Germans passed on,” Fisher said. “He was hospitalized for five years and learned how to walk again with two canes being put back together again like the Six Million Dollar Man.”

New York City agent Della Leathers wrote about her “very patriotic and principled” son Jonathan, who “signed up for ROTC in college, was then commissioned as an Army officer, and served five years in the 10th Mountain Division, including two tours as a supply and logistics officer in Afghanistan.” It prepared him for his work in logistics for a major consulting firm, Leathers said, noting that he and some fellow veterans founded Ukrainetorch.com, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“It raises funds and brings needed medical supplies, training, technology, and other assistance directly to where it is needed,” she added. “He is currently there on his twelfth trip. They are doing as much as possible to support democracy for Ukraine, Europe, and the rest of the world.”

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.-based agent Kara Gill wrote about being “a proud Navy spouse.”

“I had the privilege of supporting my husband throughout his career in the U.S. Navy,” Gill said. “Over the years, our family moved many times (Honolulu, Hawaii and Newport, Rhode Island), experiencing deployments, relocations, and the tight-knit community that comes with military life. Through those experiences, I developed a deep appreciation for service, resilience, and the strong sense of connection that defines the military community.”

“Living the military lifestyle taught me adaptability, empathy, and the importance of clear communication skills that are invaluable in real estate,” she added. “I understand firsthand the challenges of frequent moves, finding a new home on a tight timeline, and creating stability during transitions. That experience drives me to go above and beyond for my clients, especially military families, to ensure their home-buying or selling process is as smooth and stress-free as possible.”

Gill said her time as a Navy spouse instilled “a deep respect for service, sacrifice, and community. It’s more than just a chapter of my life, it’s the foundation of who I am and how I approach my work. I take pride in bringing that same sense of dedication, integrity, and compassion to my clients and colleagues every day. For me, being part of the military community isn’t just an experience, it’s a lifelong commitment to serving others with honor and heart.”

Naples, Fla.-based agent Charlina McGee wrote about her work on the board of an organization that supports active-duty military and veterans.

“As the daughter of a career military Air Force veteran, I'm passionate about our military, both active-duty and our veterans,” McGee said. “I'm on the board of Patton Legacy Sports, which sponsors The Remembrance Bowl in Normandy, France, each June to coincide with D-Day events. I am fully engaged with this event that features active-duty military and draws many veterans of WWII and other U.S. wars. We are also going to Bastogne this December to participate in the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. All things military for me! :)”
