Where to Eat, Play and Relax in Hamilton Heights

Even considering the smashing success of  Hamilton: An American Musical , many people (including native New Yorkers) sometimes forget that Alexander Hamilton called northern Manhattan home. In fact, the Hamilton Heights neighborhood—sandwiched between Washington Heights to the north and Harlem to the south—is named after the Founding Father. You can even visit his original home , which still stands today. Hamilton Heights is marked by a rich history, renewed growth, stunning architecture and some of the highest elevations in Manhattan, offering postcard views of the Hudson River. To get an insider’s take on Hamilton Heights, we asked Elliman’s Randall Dolland , who has lived and worked in the neighborhood for more than four years, for his favorite places to eat, play and relax in this thriving, often overlooked enclave. So, let’s take a tour! Where to Eat “There are so many new restaurants popping up in Hamilton Heights as Columbia University (and its students) moves ever farther north,” notes Randall. “Options abound, but one definite standout is Oso , which offers incredible  vegetarian quesadillas and a great tequila selection. Be sure to stop in and try the brunch.” Where to Play If you’re looking for a place to play, whether you’re single or a family, Randall recommends Riverbank State Park . “This place has it all. Rising 69 feet above the Hudson River, this unique park offers everything from tennis and basketball to indoor swimming and a whole lot more. There are even garden plots for those green thumbs among us. And when you’re done sweating it out, stop at Sofrito , located right in the park with great views of the river, George Washington bridge and Manhattan skyline.” Where to Relax “Hamilton Heights offers some of the best relaxation spots in Manhattan,” says Randall. “It’s only ten minutes away by train, but it’s far enough from the hustle of midtown, so you can really relax up here.” Be sure to visit Saint Nicholas Park for Summer Sunday concerts and stunning views of City College and the surrounding Sugar Hill neighborhood. Or try your hand at Bikram Yoga Harlem on 145 th  Street, which, Randall states, is “one of the last studios in Manhattan still teaching the original series.” A Local’s Spot “If you’re looking for a late-night spot for great bites, friendly staff, solid drinks and the best live jazz, the newly opened L’Argot is the place to go,” Randall advises. “It’s open until 2am daily and is the perfect answer to any craving.” Meet The Expert | Randall Dolland , Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. Driven by a penchant for connecting people and properties, Randall brings formidable expertise to every step within the real estate journey. From search to sale, he has helped craft countless success stories for buyers and sellers across New York City.
