Introducing Douglas Elliman’s Florida Rookie of the Year: Oliver Lloyd

With a passion for architecture, real estate in his blood and a tenacious work ethic, Oliver Lloyd succeeded beyond his exceptions in his first year at Douglas Elliman, closing a few big deals and earning him Douglas Elliman’s Rookie of the Year honors for Florida in the process. Oliver Lloyd Elliman Insider caught up with Oliver to find out what motivates him to excel, why’s he’s thankful every day for his move to Elliman, and the advice he’d give new agents looking to succeed–hint: hard work. You were named Elliman’s Rookie of the Year for Florida. How does that feel? Oliver Lloyd: It is certainly a real honor to be named Rookie of the Year for Florida. I’m pleasantly surprised as it was a tough year joining Douglas Elliman only weeks before the world changed with Covid. EI: Tell us a little about your background. Did you always love real estate?​ OL: I have loved all aspects of real estate since I was a child. My stepfather was in the real estate investment banking business in New York and I always found overhearing him on the phone talking about deals to be thrilling. He really taught me how to create and nurture relationships which is the most important part of this job, I find. I worked for at a commercial real estate firm for a few years and although I enjoyed that experience, my love of interior design, architecture and beautiful homes makes selling residential real estate more exciting for me personally. To that, I also continue to have a development business in North Carolina where we build high-end condominium and townhouse projects for sale. I do this with my uncle and a small investor group. EI: 2020 was an interesting year for everyone, but especially for a rookie. How did you manage to rise to the top? ​ OL: 2020 was certainly a crazy year for us all. I think because of my age, experience and relationships, I was able to jump into this business very quickly with some great success early on. I had several large transactions in 2020 that helped me to get to the top of the pack. I also put 100% of my effort into every single day trying to create opportunities for my clients which I think is key. EI: What motivates you? ​ OL: Getting from the start to the end of a deal, successfully, is what keeps me motivated. I always want to be very active and motivation comes from from seeing my clients satisfied. It really gives me great pleasure to see other people happy and when one deal comes to an end, I can’t wait for the next. EI: How did Elliman help guide you through the year? Did you have any mentors? ​ OL: I have made a lot of friends in the business here in Miami over the past 18 or so months. Elliman has a great culture as a firm that I feel lacks at other firms in the market. I have never seen a CEO be more helpful or interactive than Jay and I think that sentiment is felt across the board. In my opinion, Ashley Holland does her job extremely well, always making sure we are covered from a PR standpoint so that is certainly much appreciated. And I could’t do it with out the amazing support from Judith and Vita in my office. EI: Why did you choose Elliman? ​ OL: I became friendly with Jay [Parker, CEO of Douglas Elliman Florida] years ago and he was responsible for bringing me to Elliman. I am so thankful for that every day. EI: Any advice for new agents? ​ OL: My advice to a new agent would be to work as hard as you possibly can every single day. This is not a business where you can put in 50% effort and expect to get great results. Take great care of your clients. Go the extra mile where other agents won’t. Do anything and everything you can and it will pay you rewards through referrals–that’s been proven.
