6 Clever Ways to Maximize a Small Space
by Elliman Editors
November 2019
Space goes quickly when you don’t have much. But, with these six clever design tips you’ll make the most of every inch of what you do have. You might even find you have room to spare.
1. Think Multipurpose
Compact stools, cubes or ottomans are great for added seating or as coffee table alternatives and tuck neatly under a side table when not in use. A daybed provides seating and a place for guests to sleep.
2. Drawers are Your Friend
Use a 3- or 4-drawer chest as a side table or nightstand. A platform bed with built-in drawers provides ample storage in a small bedroom.

3. Use Height to Your Advantage
Draw the eye up to create the illusion of higher ceilings with a floor-to-ceiling gallery wall. Tall bookshelves and multiple stacked floating shelves utilize the height of a room as well as add storage.
4. Lighten Up
A clear acrylic coffee table or dining chairs keep things light, airy and visually open. Mirrors reflect light and make a space feel larger.
5. Free-Up Floor Space
Replace floor lamps with wall sconces which can be hard-wired or plugged in. Mount the tv and eliminate a bulky media cabinet or opt for a more streamlined console table that doubles as a desk.
6. Customize Your Closet
Add a shelf or two above the hanging rod to stack storage boxes or baskets. Maximize shoe storage with a shoe rack.
