Rising to the Occasion: Elaine Dolley on What it Means to Live Authentically
by Elliman Editors
April 2020
Like many of us, Douglas Elliman agent Elaine Dolley of Boston has experienced a few personal and professional challenges during these unusual times. But she’s discovered a few tips and tricks for navigating today’s environment.
They have helped her thus far and are part of the reason for her success in representing new developments across the Boston area. She is currently Director of Sales for 55 India, a boutique unit on Boston’s waterfront which is scheduled to break ground in late summer. Her approach, however, includes more than just a dedicated work ethic. Elliman Insider sat down with Elaine to learn about her positive outlook and why she believes that the motto “nothing is impossible” can help her through any obstacles life throws her way.
Elliman Insider: What are some things you’ve rediscovered about yourself by being forced to change your routine (in both your business and personal life)?
ELAINE DOLLEY: During our forced seclusion I have been reminded of the simple things in life and those things that I normally take little or no time to focus on. Cooking has always been both a passion and a hobby of mine. Recently I have been cooking up a storm! Not only has my daughter had the luxury of the benefits, but my concierge and door staff at my home have as well! Professionally, I realize that real estate truly is my life and my forever LOVE.
EI: What are some personal challenges this pandemic has presented to you that you have been able to overcome?
ED: Having my teenage daughter home from boarding school has been without a doubt challenging. The concept, “Patience is a virtue“ never rang truer. Having said that, during this time I have been blessed and amazed to see my daughter, Shelby, in her online school setting conversing with her professors and her classmates. Her knowledge, her inquisitive nature and her poise are incredible.
EI: How do you think overcoming these challenges will affect the way you do business?
ED: Overcoming the patience issue for me both personally and professionally will hopefully translate to less stress going forward. Less self-inflicted pressure would make me feel lighter and translate to more results. I am driven by results, hence my success throughout my 30+ years in real estate.
EI: How are you getting creative when it comes to promoting your business during this time?
ED: Getting creative during this time is both natural and critical. I have focused more readily on my social media—updating profiles and posting more frequently. The best choice I made during this time was to hire an incredible marketing expert. She has turned my social media around. In addition, she has become a partner whom I can brainstorm with not only on posts, but on other areas of marketing to ensure a results-driven response.
EI: What are some business strategy changes you plan to implement once we return to normal?
ED: From a business strategy perspective, I know that I will continue to expand my social media as we get back to our “new normal.” In addition, I believe it important to understand that the showing aspects of a new property have forever changed and perhaps for the better. A prospect is now qualified prior to booking a “showing.” This is done directly or through the broker with the added advantages of virtual tours, fly overs of locations, etc. I expect this will translate to more efficient use of time and result in more closed deals.
At the end of the day, I am always a grateful person in good times and in bad. I believe wholeheartedly that “nothing is impossible“ and to always “dream bigger.” I know that we cannot receive what we do not ask for.
EI: Sometimes we develop a new appreciation for the little—or big—things during major life changes. What are some things that you’ve been most grateful for during this time?
ED: The true definition of greatness for me is to “Live Authentically Who You Are.” I plan to continue to do this as I move through this challenge with my many friends, family and my clients. I am blessed and forever grateful!
