My Neighborhood: Southampton

For Dennis Basso, the jet-setting fashion designer and part-time Water Mill resident, Southampton Village provides all the sense of community he needs in his downtime. When he’s not catching up with friends at his favorite local coffeehouse, he’s likely to be found at home with his partner, Michael Cominotto, and their two little brown schnauzers. “On a Saturday afternoon in the summer or fall, we love to just be at the house and have friends over for a nice leisurely lunch,” he says. “It’s always a pleasure to have that not- rushed feeling.”

ALL THE PERKS
“We wake up at home, have coffee, and then in the late morning, I stop by my favorite spot: Saint Ambroeus in Southampton. A lot of my friends pop in there. You never know who you’ll bump into. I love standing at the bar for an espresso. It has a very European feel.”

GREEN SCENE
“Being out east is being outside: We love our garden and our outside space. I like to go to Fowler’s Garden Center , which was formerly Lynch’s. I’m always buying plants and things for the garden. I often make two visits a weekend. When I’m there, I feel very much part of the landscape.”

COCKTAILS, ANYONE?
“We love the Italian restaurant Tutto il Giorno . In the evening, I’ll get a Grey Goose martini, shaken straight up, no vermouth, olives. In the afternoon, I love a Bloody Mary or a Bellini.”
GET FRESH
“When I’m on the East End, I try to remove myself from work and just enjoy being in the house, having the dogs run around and having friends stop in. Our home has been a wonderful part of our lives. There’s something delightful about just being chill and entertaining.
To stock up on fresh foods to serve guests, I go to the Clamman Seafood Market and Citarella Gourmet Market . Those shops make you feel like you’re in a small town.”
