Mother’s Day Means Business for These Mom-led Real Estate Teams

by Elliman Editors

May 2020

Mother’s Day represents something special to all of us, an opportunity to reflect upon and thank our mothers for the love, support and sacrifices they routinely make for our benefit. For those who get the chance to work with their mothers, they experience that gratitude daily. This Mother’s Day, Elliman Insider caught up with a some mom-led real estate teams at Douglas Elliman to see why they chose to work as a family to build a career together and the lessons they have learned along the way. Michaela, Lulu & Paulina Keszler The Hamptons   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Michaela Keszler (@michaela.keszler) on Dec 24, 2019 at 2:03pm PST ELLIMAN INSIDER : How long have you been a motherdaughter team? Michaela: I was first and then the girls became interested. My daughter Lulu has been in the business for five years and my younger daughter Paulina joined last fall. Paulina: It actually all started because I quit my job and decided to pursue my dream of writing scripts. When I told my parents about this wild dream, they were so supportive of me pursuing a creative passion. The only condition was that I find something else that pays the bills and further my experience as I write. So I did my test and got my license, and fell in love with my new-found career! I think my mom knew from the start! EI: W hat is one thing you admire most about your mother? Paulina: I admire so much about my mom but mostly it’s her strong sense of self. She is always honest, genuine, and charming. I love telling people that I work with my mom 8 hours a day and we still look forward to dinner together every night. – Paulina Keszler EI: What have been some valuable lessons you’ve learned from each other? Michaela:  Being family, you have to make sure not to have real estate your main focus as a family or at the dinner table. Paulina:  When it comes to work, if you don’t love it don’t do it. EI: What do you enjoy most about working together as a team and as a family? Michaela: We still have a lot of fun together. Experiencing how they judge a situation or client and how we put our different opinions together. I know when I give a customer to my girls they will do a fabulous job. Paulina:  I love telling people that I work with my mom 8 hours a day and we still look forward to dinner together every night. Irina & Allison Sher New York City   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Irina Sher I NYC Real Estate (@irinasher_ny) on Mar 8, 2020 at 10:21am PDT EI: How long have you been a motherdaughter team ? Irina: We joined forces in February of this year. I joined Douglas Elliman 6 years ago, and my goal was always to have Allison and I work together. I’ve always seen my daughters and I as a “Sher Team”. We’re a team in life, and I felt like being a team in business would make us unstoppable. EI: What is one thing you admire most about your mother? Allison: Asking me to pick one thing feels like an impossible task, however, what has stuck with me through life is my mother’s tenacity. My mom raised me with the saying, “There’s no such thing as luck itself. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” What has stuck with me through life is my mother’s tenacity. – Allison Sher EI: What do you think are some of the benefits of working together as a team? Irina: The first thing that comes to mind is the unshakable trust – trust is profoundly valuable in this business. That trust, combined with Allison’s modern business acumen and my 30 years of entrepreneurship, help advance our business to the next level. Our foundations are so complimentary we’re stronger together than on our own. EI: What is your favorite part about working together with your mom? Allison: Knowing I never have to walk into a room alone. I have my biggest cheerleader at my side. I feel stronger with a partner by my side. I can be shy when I first enter into a new environment, so having not only a friend, but my biggest cheerleader with me whose primary goal is to help me succeed, makes me feel unstoppable. Laurie & Michael Cooper New York City Laurie & Michael Cooper EI: How long have you been a team and what has the experience been like ? Michael: I started working with my mom when I was 9 making the copies of board packages and helping out at open houses. Then when I turned 18 I got my license and it’s been over 30 years now. We ran an independent brokerage firm until we joined Douglas Elliman in the fall of last year. EI: What do you admire most about your mom? I am always in awe of her salesmanship and just the sheer amount of information that she has at her fingertips. How she speaks with such authority and expertise. Every day is like sitting in on a master class in real estate. I am the only broker who can get sent home for not being dressed warm enough when it is cold out. – Michael Cooper EI: What do you think are some of the benefits of working together as a team? Michael: The fact that we work as a think tank on all the deals. It’s great to have someone to bounce ideas off of. At this point I know what she will say before she says it. EI: What are some things you’ve learned from her in the years working together? Michael: She has taught me to always keep going and never give up. One of her favorite things about being in real estate is what you lose today you can make up for tomorrow. And we keep each other laughing. I always joke that I am the only broker who can get sent home for not being dressed warm enough when it is cold out. There really is nobody I would rather work with. . The Pascullos Long Island  EI: How long have you been a family team ? Tricia: Both my brother Michael Pascullo and I have worked with our mother, Patti Pascullo since 2016. Truthfully, I feel like we’ve been part of her business of selling real estate since the day we were born. We’ve heard the real estate lingo for as long as I can remember. EI: What do you admire most about your mom? Tricia: To know our mom is to love her tenacity and honesty. She is one of the most well known agents in the industry, and I know for certain, everyone who has ever done business with her has been privileged to learn something along the way and respect her immensely. Personally, I learn something new every single day we work together. To know our mom is to love her tenacity and honesty. – Tricia Pascullo-Salegna EI: What do you think are some of the benefits of working together as a team? Tricia: Being surrounded by the people who really care about us, who respect and support us unconditionally everyday, is the best part about working as a family team. We get to spend all of these weeks, months, years with our mom. I’m very grateful for that. EI: What are some things you’ve learned from her in the years working together? Tricia: I am a new mom with young children and my mother has instilled in me the value of balance. She always reminds Michael and me that a positive work-life balance will benefit our families and our clients. Betsy S. Green & Patricia Isen New York City Betsy S. Green & Patricia Isen EI: How long have you been a team ? Patricia: Officially almost 4 yea rs. But my mom Betsy has been in the business for 50 years. She has won the lifetime achievement award 3 times! Betsy: I actually started about 60 years ago.  EI: What are some of the benefits of working together ? Patricia: I am able to always call and discuss deals, negotiating and brainstorming with someone I love & trust.  Betsy: In business, when you trust your partner completely, you can achieve great things together. EI: What do you admire most about your mom? Patricia: I have always admired that my mother’s career has always been her way of life and never felt like work to her. Brittany and Shirley Sherman California EI : How long have you been a motherdaughter team? Brittany: We formed the Sherman Team in 2014, so we have been working together for 6 years. EI : How did you decide to join forces? Did you go into real estate together or did just one of you start first before the other came on board? Brittany: My mom has been an agent for about 20 years. She and I are very close and I started to keep her company on weekends at open houses and showings. She thought that we could excel together and be a great team, so she kept telling me to get my license. After a few years of convincing, I left my corporate job, got my license and joined her. EI : In light of Mother’s Day, what is one thing you admire most about your mother? Brittany: My mom is a truly amazing and loving person. I am lucky to have her as my mother and role model. I admire the kind and thoughtful person she is and she always goes above and beyond for the people in her life, whether it be for a family member or a client. EI: What do you think are some of the benefits of working together as a team? Brittany: The best thing about working with your family is that you have total trust in each other. We are both a team and a family and we always have each other’s best interest at heart. We had complete trust in each other from day one and we have always been so close. We both bring different skills to the table and really balance each other. EI: What have been some valuable lessons you’ve learned from each other (challenges you’ve had to overcome or things you’ve had to teach each other)? Brittany: Like any team dynamic, working together as a mother-daughter team has its challenges. You need to be able to take a step back from your personal relationship and look at these challenges in a professional way. It’s important to learn each other’s strength and weaknesses and structure the team around them. EI: What is your favorite part of working together as a team and as a family? Brittany: Working together is truly a gift, we get so much quality time together—it is the best. It also makes the wins so much sweeter. We know that we will always be there for one another and have each other’s back no matter what. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! Contact the listing agents J.
