3 Easy ways to Achieve Luxury Hotel-Style Décor in your Home
by Elliman Editors
October 2017
Hotels are no longer just a place to lay your head when you’re traveling. They’ve become aspirational spaces that many seek to emulate in their own homes. That’s why Rima Suqi asked London-based designer Martin Brudnizki to break down how he transformed the interiors of the Beekman Hotel in Elliman Magazine . He aimed to create a space that “feels like a family-owned hotel that has been here since New York’s inception as a destination for worldly travelers, passing through the generations as each member made their stamp.” This translates to pared-back architectural details and carefully chosen layers from different eras. Here are his tips for how you can implement the Beekman Hotel’s décor in your home.
1. Start with a Bold Couch
The Beekman Hotel’s lobby is an object lesson in how to successfully mix periods and styles, as evidenced by a seating area that includes midcentury Eames stools with more traditional armchairs trimmed with fun bullion fringe. Recreate this look and add impact to your living room with a room-anchoring gold velvet settee like the Holloway sofa from Anthropologie ($2,098) . If you’re afraid of patterns, put them on the floor, like the designer did with a colorful carpet.
2. Layer on Patterned Throw Pillows

Patterned throw pillows add interest and additional comfort to any sofa. Try an ikat print like this one from Madeline Weinrib ($525) or break up the gold with a complementary light blue hue such as the Laal Light Indigo pillow from John Robshaw ($140). There are no rules. Play around and you’ll find things that seemingly shouldn’t go together end up being style soulmates.
3. Use Statement Lighting

Choose a color palette—in this case jewel tones—and then throw in a few surprises, like a black-and-white zigzag table that looks like it might have been a gift from an artistic aunt. And don’t forget about lighting. Draw the eye up with a statement chandelier like this wood Durand chandelier by Currey & Company ($2,190) .
