A Longtime Resident’s Guide to Living in Scarsdale

by Elliman Editors

May 2018

What better love letter can you give your hometown than to raise your own family there? That’s what longtime Scarsdale resident Deborah Skolnik did. “I moved here before I turned two,” says Skolnik, editor of New York Metro Parents and mom of two teenaged daughters. “Aside from college and six years in the city with my husband, I’ve lived here my whole life. It’s convenient to Manhattan (a 30-minute train ride to Grand Central) and other towns in Westchester, but there’s enough here to keep you entertained.” Part of the upscale enclave’s appeal is its blend of vitality and quaintness, epitomized by a Tudor-style town center where buildings sport peaked roofs and half-timbered facades. “It still looks just like it did when I was a kid,” says Skolnik. — by Kathy Passero ECLECTIC EATERIES “The Parkway Café in Scarsdale Village is a favorite of mine for casual dining. It has an old-fashioned diner-style setting and wonderful omelets. For a good corned beef sandwich, matzo ball soup, and other comfort foods, I like the Metro Deli .” “If you prefer to be part of the ladies-who-lunch set, go to Standing Room Only and order a chopped salad. For special occasions, my pick is Moscato . I order the Vitello Martini, veal with a crispy parmesan crust and white wine sauce.” SWEET TALK Courtesy Lulu Cake Boutique “Another thing Scarsdale is known for is fantastic bakeries. In Scarsdale Village alone, we have five, including La Renaissance Pâtisserie Française , Lulu Cake Boutique , and Martine’s , to which I’m addicted. I don’t understand how there are so many skinny women here when there are so many world-class bakeries.” BUY, BUY Courtesy of La Dentelliere “I’m a fan of Jewels by Joanne because it carries fine jewelry as well as more casual jewelry you might give a child for her birthday. I also like Petticoat Lane , which has great reasonably priced handbags.” “One of the most unique stores in Scarsdale is La Dentelliere . It sells very upscale linens and household goods.” LOCAL LIFE Courtesy of Scarsdale Public Library “For culture, a lot of us head to the Scarsdale Public Library for events ranging from foreign films to live music to readings by new authors.” “In the summer, there’s a fantastic community pool that’s actually a complex of four pools in a country club-like setting with a really good snack bar. It’s a wonderful selling point for the town.” GREAT OUTDOORS Courtesy of Greenburgh Nature Center “If you want to get outside and enjoy the weather in any season, the 33-acre Greenburgh Nature Center has exhibits, a manor house, and trails. The Weinberg Nature Center has kids’ programs and a 12.3-mile wooded trail loop that my friends and I like to walk.” AVAILABLE PROPERTIES IN SCARSDALE 138 Fox Meadow Road Scarsdale, New York Price: $3,875,000 6 Bedrooms | 6.5 Bathrooms Live in a brand new construction stone and shingle Colonial built by KOSL Building Group.
