Benjamin Dougharty’s mother, Debbie, was 56 years old when she was diagnosed with Early On-Set Alzheimer’s Disease.

“She was a brilliant woman, daughter, mother, grandmother, wife, teacher and librarian who loved sharing her knowledge,” says Dougharty, a Douglas Elliman agent based in Houston, Texas .
Now 70, she has lost her ability to speak, feed herself and walk.
“This disease has robbed her and her family of so much,” Dougharty adds.
It has also inspired him to channel that loss into helping the millions of other individuals and families who are similarly enduring the impacts of this incurable affliction.
On Saturday, November 11, Dougharty will join Team Debbie for the 2023 Ride to End ALZ Texas , a fundraising event supporting the Alzheimer’s Association’s efforts to develop methods of treatment and prevention. Routes of various lengths, from 10 to 100 miles, start and finish at the Blue Hole Regional Park in Wimberley, Texas.

Saturday’s ride marks the third outing for Team Debbie. After Dougharty’s father, Paul, signed up to participate in the first Texas ride two years ago, the annual event became a Dougharty family affair. For the second year, Dougharty’s 14-year-old nephew, Nicholas—who shares a birthday with Debbie—will ride and raise funds for the team.
Last year, Team Debbie’s riders raised a combined $34,950. This year, the team is pushing to break $35,000. Donations may be submitted until December 11.
“With each mile we ride, we are raising funds to advance research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer’s,” Dougharty wrote on his fundraising page . “We not only ride for Debbie but for all of you who have or are working thru this with a friend or loved one. We ride for all!”
