How Agents Say Thanks During the Holidays
by Elliman Editors
December 2019
For many of us, the holidays are a great way to pause and reflect on everything we appreciate: from our friends and family to our careers and hobbies. For some, there’s no better time to give back than during the end-of-the-year festivities. Here’s how our agents show their appreciation for their clients and coworkers alike—with everything from homemade baked goods to llamas.
New York
About a month before Thanksgiving, we send out an invitation to clients inviting them to my house for their own personal pie. Some folks come, get their pie and run, some folks stay all night. Some like to bring their pie to Thanksgiving on Thursday, and some eat them at their homes on Tuesday night. You do you! This year we gave out 47 Magnolia Bakery pies.

Something personal and homemade is the way to go! I am giving my clients and wonderful Douglas Elliman coworkers some of my best homemade goodies: blackberry jam, homemade Swedish pickles, mustard, apple chutney and dried spices from my organic herbs garden in Southampton.

I give llamas! For the past 20 years, my family gives to a charity which provides impoverished families in third world countries the opportunity to be self-sufficient through farming with livestock. A gift of a llama, a goat, a cow, rabbits or even bees are all offered. These gifts provide commerce and dignity. In honor of my clients, I donate to heifer.org and send lovely cards acknowledging the gratitude I have to be able to donate in their names.

I drop off caviar to my clients’ homes right before the New Year. I think that the week before Christmas is so saturated, that I prefer to focus on celebrating the New Year with my clients.

Lots of my most valued clients love fitness, but don’t like going to gyms because they’re crowded and the drive is time-consuming. They’ve had personal trainers come to them, but aren’t thrilled with having a stranger inside of their home. They’re high net worth folks, so privacy is important. I bought the newest “Mirror” for them, which is basically a virtual personal trainer. It looks like a regular full-length, decorative mirror, but it’s loaded with streaming physical fitness content. When it’s not being used it’s actually a pretty awesome furnishing and adds to the decor of any room.

I send my very top clients the Franz Berko 2020 Calendar with classic photos shot from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s in Aspen. He was an internationally acclaimed photographer, who chronicled the early days, and his granddaughter organizes a striking black-and-white calendar. It puts people in touch with the early modern history of our resort town and gives them a feeling for how our town looked then. There’s also some amazing landscapes.

Since we live and work in a beach community, we throw a “Santa In The Sand” event. We book a couple of hours with Santa In The Sand and have coffee and doughnuts on the beach and gift professional family holiday photos to our clients.
