During this difficult time, where business may not be business as usual, Douglas Elliman agents are still finding ways to get creative in both their business and personal lives. Elliman Insider sat down with Mary Beth Adelson to find out how she continues to stay connected, focused and motivated and what she is most looking forward to when things go back to being business as usual.
Staying Connected
I’m making great use of my iphone and computer. Lots of Zoom, Facetime and Houseparty. Enjoying the regular interaction with college girlfriends I rarely chat with and connecting our own children on their xboxes. It’s really sweet to hear their voices in the other room while their moms are talking.
Staying Motivated
Patrick McLaughlin in the Hamptons started an Elliman Peloton Facebook page, and we choose a ride each day. Even if you don’t make it at the start time, you can post later during the day that it is done. It’s a little bit of accountability that drives you to stay focused even if so much has changed.

Staying Positive
How I’m staying positive: I am loving the time with my husband and son. We are doing family movie night, every night at 8pm. The Indiana Jones movies have stood the test of time…National Lampoon’s Family Vacation, not as much.
Servicing Clients
Thankfully, I have some fantastic clients that are not panicking. We are regularly chatting, and trying to figure out ways to take advantage of this unusual situation. I was so excited to have an accepted offer this week, despite the uncertainty.
Supporting Community
How I’m supporting my community: we have not left our home for over two weeks. I think this is the best way we can all help. Slow the curve. My housekeeper, who is being paid by me, but not others, is food insecure. I have figured out how to get her set up with two food pantries, and made sure her family of five has meals.
Moving Business Forward
I started a team about six months ago, but we really needed to do a lot of the back office set up. Whitney Mogavero, Lisa Gustin and I are really looking organized!
Takeout or Home Cooking?
We are only cooking at home. We are super thankful for Freshdirect and their reliable delivery. We are making a lot of chicken. We are so glad we have an indoor grill from Hamilton Beach (you can get it on Amazon, it’s a game changer). My girlfriend is a professional chef, and she is walking us through Sunday dinner each weekend. My girlfriends and I order the ingredients in advance, open a bottle of wine and cook as a virtual group.

Developing Hobbies
Do cooking and cleaning count as developing hobbies? Being a stay at home (working) mom means I am suddenly a short order cook, housekeeper, gal Friday, school teacher and psychologist. Haven’t had time to start something different.
Something to Look Forward to
I can’t wait to hug my extended family. Or eat a meal that I haven’t prepared. Chatting it up on the 3rd floor at 575, Madison Avenue since I’m missing the office! And seeing Learka Bosnak and Heather T. Roy on our next Douglas Elliman/Knight Frank adventure.
