In celebration of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Elliman Insider invited Douglas Elliman agents to share their experiences and reflect on the role their identity and heritage have played in their real estate careers.
Wendy Lee, Agent, New York City
What aspects of your identity are most meaningful for you? Are there cultural traditions or historic moments or other elements that are a particular source of pride?
Being Taiwanese and part of the broader Asian community, I find our deep-rooted respect for elders to be one of the most meaningful aspects of my identity. From a young age, we are taught the importance of honoring those who raised us—parents, grandparents, and ancestors. It’s not just tradition; it’s a way of life centered on gratitude and reciprocity. While this may contrast with more individualistic cultures, I take great pride in this collective sense of responsibility and the enduring bonds it fosters across generations.
How did find your path to success in this field?
Success in real estate begins with knowledge. In a dynamic market like New York City, staying informed—down to the minute—is essential. My clients are often highly sophisticated professionals in finance and business, so understanding both macroeconomic trends and hyper-local market shifts is crucial.
Additionally, being bilingual and bicultural has played a pivotal role in my career. It allows me to bridge cultural gaps and create a stronger sense of trust with clients, especially those from international backgrounds. When clients feel seen, understood, and spoken to in their native language, they’re no longer navigating a foreign market—they’re working with someone who genuinely understands them.
How do you think brokerages like Elliman can help foster greater diversity and understanding in the industry?
Real estate success comes in many forms, and there’s no one-size-fits-all mold for a great agent. What matters most are the values we bring to the table—integrity, professionalism, empathy, and an inner drive to serve.
Brokerages like Elliman can champion diversity by recognizing and investing in these qualities across all backgrounds, helping agents harness their individuality and potential. When agents feel supported and seen, they are empowered to thrive and better serve a diverse clientele.
