Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Maria Bardelli
by ELLIMAN INSIDER TEAM
September 2025
In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Elliman Insider invited Douglas Elliman agents to share their experiences and reflect on the role their identity and heritage have played in their real estate careers.
Maria Bardelli, Agent, Greenwich, Conn.
What aspects of your identity are most meaningful for you? Are there cultural traditions or historic moments or other elements that are a particular source of pride?
I was about six years old when I first moved from Puerto Rico to Connecticut—which was very different from living on an island! I did not speak any English, so that was really hard for me. I remember watching the TV show M*A*S*H and listening to it to get myself familiar with the language and interactions and learn faster. Adjusting to this new life was a challenge.
How did you find your path to success in this field?
I’ve worked in sales for as long as I can remember. When I was 18, I started working in a bank and worked my way up to branch manager. I’ve always been good at communicating with my clients. I listen to what they want and what they need, and so they trust me. In this business, that’s very important: clear communication and mutual understanding.
Are there values or elements of your identity that you draw strength from in your work as an agent?
It’s important for me to be able to communicate with my clients. Especially working with the Spanish-speaking community, it’s so important to be able to speak the same language and fully explain the buying process to clients who are more comfortable speaking in Spanish.
How do you think brokerages like Elliman can help foster greater diversity and understanding in the industry?
I think mentorship is a great way to learn and foster career growth, especially for those who are new to the business.
