Yonkers Real Estate

Picture of Yonkers

With a population of 195,976, Yonkers is the fourth most populous city in the state of New York (behind New York City, Buffalo, and Rochester), and the most populous in Westchester. The towns of Mount Vernon, Tuckahoe, Eastchester, Bronxville, and Scarsdale lie to the east, Greenburgh to the north, and the Hudson River to the west. Just south of Yonkers are the Riverdale and Woodlawn sections of the New York City borough of the Bronx. The city's name comes from the title of its young Dutch founder, Adriaen Van der Donck, who was referred to as jonker, or "young gentleman."

This hilly city overlooking the Hudson River is as varied in landscape and as it is in population. Though Yonkers contains more than 37 distinct residential neighborhoods, it can be seen as having four basic quadrants.

Northeast Yonkers, bordering the town of Greenburgh, is the most suburban, with elegant vintage homes in neighborhoods like Crestwood, an enclave of well-tended colonials, Tudors and Victorians, and plenty of parks. Here, too, are the standard suburban subdivisions consisting of narrow, winding streets, with neo-classic homes on tidy lots. Sarah Lawrence College is located in Northeastern Yonkers.

In Northwest Yonkers you'll find many surviving Victorian homes and 19th century estates. This ethnically diverse area overlooks the Hudson with a prime view of the Palisades. Though some of the city's most beautiful parks and nature preserves—including the Hudson River Museum, Untermyer Park and the Lenoir Nature Preserve—are here, Northwest Yonkers tends to have a more urban feel.

Southeast Yonkers is reminiscent of many of the residential sections of Queens or the Bronx, with a history of Irish and Italian immigrants who lived here generations ago and whose families may still be among the neighborhood's residents. The Cross County Shopping Center is a big draw in this area.

Neighborhoods in Southwest Yonkers vary even more than most in the city. Off South Broadway, Nodine Hill, Park Hill—perched on a high wooded hill overlooking the Hudson River—and Hudson Park feature 19th-century mansions and bungalows and new condominiums and rentals. Other upscale neighborhoods in Southwest Yonkers are Ludlow Park, home to many vintage Victorian, colonial, Tudor and Gothic homes, and Van Cortlandt Crest just over the Riverdale border.

A revitalization of the downtown Yonkers/Getty Square area has meant more growth for Southwest Yonkers. Several luxury condos and rentals—like the one housed in a three-story former trolley barn—built along the Hudson have been attracting young singles, empty nesters and professionals. In addition, the project saw the renovation of a century-old pier and the construction of a sleek, modern library within the remodeled Otis elevator factory. Following in the footsteps of the award-winning X20 Xaviars on the Hudson, new restaurants and cafes have made the area a dining destination. There are plans in the works for even more public amenities and residential space in the downtown and waterfront areas.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and ‘60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Railroad, today's Westchester is the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
