White Plains Real Estate

Picture of White Plains

North of New York City in south-central Westchester, about halfway between the Hudson River and Long Island Sound, the city of White Plains is bordered by the town of North Castle to the north, Harrison to the north and east, to the south by Scarsdale and to the west by Greenburgh.

White Plains is known as the birthplace of the state of New York. On July 9, 1776, the new state was officially formed at a meeting of the New York Provincial Congress during which the Declaration of Independence was delivered at the city's courthouse. The Declaration itself was read in public for the first time from the steps of the same courthouse two days later on July 11.

White Plains is the county seat and the commercial center of Westchester County many county, state and federal buildings are located here and home to almost 60,000 people. White Plains is indeed a city, offering urban amenities like shopping, walkable neighborhoods, a wealth of cultural and recreational facilities and outstanding opportunities for economic growth. But you'll also find plenty of opportunities for green, clean, quiet suburban living.

Serving as a retail destination for the entire county, White Plains offers stores like Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Whole Foods Market and over 1,000 smaller stores in four large shopping centers: The Westchester, The Westchester Pavillion, The Westchester Galleria and City Center. The city is home to a number of colleges and universities, including several of Fordham University's Graduate Schools, Pace University School of Law and Pace Graduate School and The College of Westchester.

Relatively moderate housing costs and a short commute to Midtown Manhattan an average of 35 minutes via express train make White Plains an attractive living choice for people who work in New York City. Renaissance Square, an impressive pair of 40-story towers containing a Ritz-Carlton hotel and over 400 luxury condominium units is a relatively recent addition. Trump Tower and The Lofts at City Center offer more high-end condominium living. Further from the city center are the many small neighborhoods that keep the city's public schools and the local economy strong.

The 410-seat White Plains Performing Arts Center hosts a variety of events, and White Plains is home to the Westchester Philharmonic, the county's only professional symphony orchestra. A farmers' market operates year-round in two locations, and an international open-air market happens next to City Hall on summer Wednesdays. There are plenty of nightlife options here as well. With approximately 70 restaurants and bars and a 15-screen movie theater, the city's downtown attracts a lively crowd after dark. Outside the city center you'll find three country clubs, a public golf course, an ice skating rink, three outdoor swimming pools, Liberty Park for fishing and paddle-boating and Saxon Woods park and playground.

Two Metro-North Railroad stations, the White Plains station downtown at Main Street and the North White Plains station "both on the Harlem Line" provide daily train service to Grand Central Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and 60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
