Tuckahoe Real Estate

Picture of Tuckahoe

Located in lower central Westchester County, the tiny village of Tuckahoe, NY, with a population of just over 6,400 on about half a square mile, is bounded by Bronxville to the south, the Crestwood section of Yonkers to the west and the town of Eastchester, of which it is a part, to the north and east. For much of the 19th century and into the 20th, Tuckahoe was a success story built on white marble–the vein of high-quality white marble that became the Tuckahoe Marble Quarry was a major source, used for everything from gravestone markers to buildings and public monuments including New York City Hall, St. Patrick's Cathedral, the New York City Public Library and the General Post Office in Washington, DC.

The quarry closed in 1930, but recent years have seen a commercial renaissance of sorts in this sleepy suburban village. A number of former manufacturing buildings have been converted to modern luxury condominiums and new restaurants offering everything from classic Italian to gourmet gastropub fare to the oceans of beer on tap at the famous Growlers Beer Bistro. Tuckahoe's handful of shops and restaurants are clustered around its two train stations–a legacy from its years as a marble supplier to the world. Homes in Tuckahoe are more affordable than in other parts of Westchester County and range from amenity-packed new condos with river views to one- and two-family homes on the quiet streets leading away from the village train stations.

Tuckahoe is a close-knit community with a small-town feel. Many families have lived here for generations. The annual Columbus Day parade is a community highlight, as are street fairs, Easter egg hunts and Fourth of July celebrations. Weekend farmers' markets are a popular gathering spot. The village is pedestrian-friendly, and families frequent Bronx River Parkway Oval with its bike paths and walking trails, ball fields and playground. New York City is only 35 minutes away by train, and plenty of shopping can be found in nearby Eastchester and Bronxville. The setting of Artist Norman Rockwell's iconic painting, "Commuters," features the Crestwood train station in Tuckahoe.

The village of Tuckahoe boasts two train stations–Tuckahoe and Crestwood–on the MTA Metro-North Railroad (Harlem Line). Easily accessible highways include the Bronx River Parkway, White Plains Road (Route 22), the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87), the Hutchinson River Parkway, and the Cross County Parkway.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and '60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
