Sleepy Hollow Real Estate

Picture of Sleepy Hollow

Located 30 miles north of Midtown Manhattan on the eastern bank of the Hudson River in the town of Mount Pleasant, the village of Sleepy Hollow is bordered by Tarrytown to the south, unincorporated sections of Mount Pleasant to the north and east, and the Hudson River to the west. Originally known as North Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow was given its current name in 1996 to honor the classic Washington Irving story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The two villages are often referred to conjunctively as Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow.

Sleepy Hollow is one of Westchester's River Towns, referring to the villages at the base of the high, wooded hills that overlook the Hudson River, often with dramatic views of the Manhattan skyline, sometimes referred to as the "gateway to the Hudson Valley." The Tappan Zee bridge—and with it, the New York State Thruway—crosses the Hudson just to the south at Tarrytown.

Sleepy Hollow's residential neighborhoods lie on either side of North Broadway and Beekman Avenue. Philipse Manor and Sleepy Hollow Manor are a few of the area's most attractive neighborhoods, with elegant Victorians and colonials on winding suburban roads and spectacular views of the Hudson. Other residential enclaves include Briggsville and Webber Park, where you'll find one-, two- and three-family homes. The more densely-populated section downtown offers single and multi-family houses as well. A large waterfront redevelopment project is in the planning stages. When completed, it will feature townhomes, shops, professional space, restaurants, public fields and parks. Ichabod's Landing, a community of luxury waterfront townhomes, is already complete.

Sleepy Hollow offers many acres of green space. A bounty of parks, forests, rivers, lakes, streams and trails—including Kingsland Point Park and the lesser-known Horan's Landing in addition to Rockefeller State Park, Tarrytown Lakes and one of the area's most scenic stretches of the Hudson River—invite hiking, biking, fishing and just enjoying the view from one of several waterside dining spots. Philipse Manor Beach Club is a private beach club with a 40-slip marina for members.

Sleepy Hollow boasts several historic landmarks including the Tarrytown Lighthouse, the Manor House at Philipsburg Manor and Kykuit, the mansion that John D. Rockefeller built in 1913. As far as the legend from the Washington Irving tale, the famous bridge is long gone, so the village erected a steel statue of the headless horseman at the spot where it once stood. The statue is a popular stop for visitors, especially around Halloween.

Sleepy Hollow is served by the Philipse Manor stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and ‘60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
