The city of Rye, NY is Westchester County's smallest city, covering 20 square miles and home to just over 15,000 residents (not to be confused with the the town of Rye, a separate, municipality containing the villages of Port Chester, Rye Brook and part of Mamaroneck). With several miles of Long Island Sound coastline along its eastern side, Rye is bordered by Port Chester and Rye Brook to the north, Harrison to the west and Mamaroneck to the south. The city is located approximately 25 miles north of Manhattan and about 10 miles south of Greenwich, CT.
Rye is one of the county's wealthiest cities, helping to uphold Westchester's reputation for sprawling estates, exclusive country clubs and moneyed residents. Situated in a prime spot along the sound, Rye has the look of a postcard-perfect seaside village. Homes in Rye cover a range of styles from split-level ranches to gingerbread Victorians and relaxed Cape Cods to vast gated estates with waterfront views. Schools here have an excellent reputation; all of the city's elementary schools are New York State Schools of Excellence and National Ribbon Schools of Excellence. The Rye Country Day School, a highly-regarded private school, is here as well. A picturesque downtown shopping district and plenty of parks add to this pretty picture.
As with much of Westchester County, history is never far from the surface here. Original milestones, installed by then-Postmaster General Benjamin Franklin in 1763, still mark the 24th, 25th, and 26th miles from New York City along Boston Post Road. Fast forward to recent times, Rye Playland a national historic landmark figures into many a Westchester County family's fond memories. Home to one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the Northeast, the Dragon Coaster, the Art Deco amusement park with its classic boardwalk serves as both entertainment and a point of historic and cultural pride (the beginning scenes of BIG, with Tom Hanks, were filmed here).
Rye Playland is far from the only game in town. Food-loving Rye residents have a great selection of restaurants to choose from. The "restaurant row" of Purchase Street is also lined with a gourmet food shops, cozy cafes and elegant boutiques. Nearby towns like White Plains, Scarsdale and Larchmont provide even more choices for shopping, dining and cultural events. Rye Town Park and Oakland Beach, offering grasslands, forests and fields as well as a beach, and Rye Golf Club "with its 18-hole golf course, swimming pool and restaurant in an historic castle overlooking Long Island Sound" are both owned and operated by the city.
As with much of southern Westchester, it's an easy commute to New York City from Rye. The Metro-North Railroad stops at Rye Station, and it takes about 37 minutes to get to Grand Central Station.
