Port Chester Real Estate

Picture of Port Chester

The village of Port Chester, NY, is located in the town of Rye, with Long Island Sound and Port Chester Harbor to the South, the villages of Rye and Harrison to the west and the Connecticut border to the east. In 1868, when Port Chester was first incorporated, it was considered a major seaport.

In some ways, Port Chester gives the appearance of being more small city than Westchester suburb. An industrial town in the early part of the 20th century, many of its factories closed during the 1950's and early 1960's. Port Chester has revitalized itself in recent years, becoming a bustling village with a growing retail and service economy and a trendy dining destination for visitors from surrounding towns like Rye Brook and Greenwich, CT. Port Chester has long been known for its diversity. In the early part of the 20th century, the village was home to a sizeable population of Italian, Irish and Polish immigrants; in recent years, a growing Latino community—with new residents from places like Mexico, Peru, Guatemala and Ecuador—has helped continue the tradition of international flavor.

Port Chester is unofficially divided into several distinct neighborhoods, located to the north and south of Westchester Avenue, Port Chester's main east-west street. Homes in Port Chester are more affordable than in some surrounding areas within the town of Rye and the county overall, though the past decade saw an upswing in property values. The housing stock is diverse here, with a mix of single- and multi family homes, condos—like the Landmark Condominium in the former Lifesavers candy factory—and rentals; two new luxury rental developments are in varying stages of completion. Overall, the village is peaceful and quiet, and considered by its residents to be a good place to raise a family. Two of Port Chester's public schools are nationally accredited Blue Ribbon Schools, and parental involvement is high.

Port Chester is known throughout Westchester County as a dining mecca with a growing restaurant scene on its "restaurant row," featuring hotspots old and new, like Tarry Lodge, Bartaco, and The Willett House, and for having the county's best variety of Latin American cuisine, with ethnic eateries representing Peru, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil.

For shopping, there's The Waterfront at Port Chester, a retail and entertainment complex at the center of the business district along the waterfront that features a 14-screen movie theater, Costco, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Super Stop & Shop, Marshall's, and numerous restaurants.

The Port Chester train station provides commuter rail service to Grand Central Terminal in New York City or Stamford and New Haven-Union Station via the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and 1960s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
