Pelham Real Estate

Picture of Pelham

Incorporated in the 1700s, Pelham is the oldest town in Westchester County. Located at the county's southeastern tip, the 2.2 square-mile town is bounded by the New York City borough of the Bronx to the south, Eastchester to the North, Mt. Vernon to the west and New Rochelle to the east. Within its borders are the villages of Pelham and Pelham Manor.

Pelham, for some, represents a move out of the city without having to completely embrace the suburbs. The Bronx is the next neighborhood over, and Midtown Manhattan is about 30 minutes away by train, making it a breeze for commuters. Pelham is more urban than much of suburban and rural Westchester to the north. Though the town has many large homes on tree-lined streets, and the Pelham Union Free School is very highly regarded, it retains many of the perks of city life. Pelham is a walking town most of its important destinations are accessible on foot, and you don't need a car to get to the train station, making the commute to Manhattan or north to Connecticut even easier. Kids walk to school, the library and downtown. The town's main shopping street is even called Fifth Avenue.

Most of Pelham was built before WWII, and you'll find a mix of historic architectural styles including Victorian, Colonial and Tudor Revival in distinct neighborhoods like Pelham Heights and Chester Park as well as large estates bordering the Long Island Sound. There's also the waterfront: Situated on Long Island Sound, Pelham offers waterfront access for boating, swimming and other waterfront activities. The exclusive New York Athletic Club has a private outpost on Pelham's Travers Island as its summer home.

There are plenty of places to shop: In addition to Fifth Avenue, there's Pelham Manor Shopping Plaza with its most welcomed new addition, a Fairway supermarket among many others. The Pelham Art Center is a focal point for the town's art and culture lovers and the historic, lovingly-restored Picture House screens treasured classics and new indie gems. Along the town's southern border lies Pelham Bay Park, the largest park in New York City. Its 2,700 acres include a bike path, hiking and riding trails and a stable, two golf courses and a beach. The Pelham Metro-North Railroad station on the New Haven Line is 15.1 miles from Grand Central Terminal; average travel time is 32 minutes.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and 60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
