New Rochelle Real Estate

Picture of New Rochelle

The city of New Rochelle in Westchester County, NY is located on Long Island Sound, bordered by Pelham, Pelham Manor and Eastchester to the west, by Scarsdale to the north and east, and by Mamaroneck and Larchmont directly to the east. With over 70,000 residents, New Rochelle is the seventh largest city (population-wise) in the state and the second largest in Westchester County.

With its mix of urban and suburban life, the city has the enviable position of being economically diverse as well as family-friendly and safe. New Rochelle was recently among the top 100 of Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live." Though there are condominiums' as well as converted lofts, high-rise offices, shopping centers, three college campuses and the largest designated historic district in Westchester'in the city's downtown business district, the majority of the city's residents live in the surrounding residential neighborhoods dominated by single-family homes. Artist Norman Rockwell created his iconic Saturday Evening Post illustrations from his studio and home in New Rochelle. The city was also the setting for E.L. Doctorow's novel Ragtime, as a backdrop against which families from diverse ethnic backgrounds face new-era challenges to daily life in comfortable, suburban New York in the early days of the 20th century.

Property values remain high here, and, though good value is a draw for homeowners, some of the country's most expensive real estate can be found in northern New Rochelle in communities like Wykagyl, with its large vintage homes, country and golf clubs, parks and a small downtown. On Long Island Sound, the gated community of Premium Point features homes that start in the low millions.

With nine miles of Long Island Sound shoreline, you know you're near water no matter where you are in town. The city operates a 300-slip marina with 150 moorings'the closest affordable dockage to New York City. The 20-acre Echo Bay area in the city's East End is currently in the planning stages of a new waterfront development that will feature residences, shops, restaurants, a boardwalk and public open space.

Neighboring towns like Scarsdale and Rye are within a ten-minute drive, expanding the choices for dining, shopping, entertainment, and cultural destinations. Within 270 acres of city-owned park land are five waterfront parks and five lakes, with beaches, gardens, and trails offering fishing, hiking and camping; private beach clubs hold events throughout the year. New Rochelle boasts Westchester's only free-standing children's library. Downtown, New Roc City is a veritable city-within-a-city of an entertainment complex that features an 18-screen movie theater, an IMAX theater, an ice hockey arena, restaurants and shopping.

The commuter railroad station in New Rochelle is served by the Metro-North railroad as well as Amtrak. Commute time to Grand Central Station via express train is just over a half hour.
