Mount Vernon Real Estate

Picture of Mount Vernon

With a population of about 70,000 and a rapidly—growing economy, Mount Vernon, NY, is the third largest city in Westchester County and one of the largest cities in the state. Mount Vernon is bordered by Bronxville and Eastchester to the north, Pelham and Pelham Manor to the east, the New York City borough of the Bronx to the south, and Yonkers to the west. The city's quieter suburban neighborhoods surround an urban downtown that shares a border with the Bronx.

With its mix of residential, commercial and industrial areas, Mount Vernon can be thought of as having four major sections. Mount Vernon's North Side is one of the most ethnically diverse areas in Westchester County, and consists of five neighborhoods: Fleetwood, Chester Heights, Huntswood, Estate Manor/Aubyn Estates and Oakwood Heights. The upscale Fleetwood neighborhood attracts residents who like its friendly, eclectic vibe; it's a good place for those who want suburban comforts but don't want to give up the feeling of urban living. Here you'll find large co—op buildings and new condo developments like Horizon at Fleetwood surrounding the center of town. There are also a number of vintage Tudors built in the 1920s on pretty, tree—lined streets. The Huntswood and Estates sections at the border of the village of Bronxville are also more affluent areas.

Mount Vernon's South Side is heavily urban–some say it's more like New York City neighbor the Bronx than typical Westchester. The neighborhood of Parkside is all commercial, while the rest of the South Side offers multi—family homes, apartment buildings and businesses.

Mount Vernon Heights is home to the city's commercial thoroughfare Sandford Square–known as Sandford Boulevard–where you'll find stores like Target, Best Buy, Stop and Shop and Restaurant Depot.

Downtown Mount Vernon is home to the Gramatan and Fourth Avenue shopping district as well as the city's transit hub and its central government. Downtown has changed little in the past 40 years. Current plans in the works for revitalizing the downtown area include more office space, rezoning to allow high density development and affordable and market—rate housing.

Mount Vernon is one of the most diverse cities in the county, with over 98 nationalities from all over the world within its borders including Brazilian, German, Portuguese, Eritrean, Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, Gambian, Italian, Korean, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, West Indian and West African. Throughout the year, the city hosts events honoring its ethnic groups for their contributions. The city also holds annual arts and cultural events downtown. Mount Vernon boasts the county's largest library system and its only athletic stadium. Mount Vernon Hospital is one of the county's four hospitals.

The 23—acre Wilson Woods Park offers a water playground and picnic and fishing areas against the backdrop of an English Tudor—style bathhouse. Hunt's Woods, tucked between Fleetwood and Chester Heights, is a small stretch of open woods with hiking and nature trails. The Bronx River Parkway on the city's west side offers bike paths, walking trails, ball fields and a playground.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large—scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and '60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro—North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
