Larchmont Real Estate

Picture of Larchmont

The pretty village of Larchmont in the town of Mamaroneck, NY retains a noticeable level of elegance in its quiet streets, picturesque downtown and stately vintage homes. Great schools, friendly neighbors and beautiful shoreline on Long Island Sound make this one-mile-square village "with the charm of a seaside town and a real commitment to the community and its families" one that residents feel fortunate to call home.

Developed as an upscale summer waterfront getaway in the 1900s, today's Larchmont is, like much of Westchester, an ideal bedroom community for commuters who work in New York City. Unlike some of its suburban neighbors, Larchmont has an understated feel, with many of its large, older homes "many with lovely gardens and porches" dating from the 1920s. There are also some condos and townhouses here, but most homes are single-family. The streets of Larchmont are tree-lined and well-tended without being overly-manicured cookie-cutter copies of each other. In the quaint village "downtown," popular restaurants and antiques shops, eclectic boutiques and galleries and cozy cafes stay busy from morning through late in the evening.

Mamaroneck schools (which include the village of Larchmont) have a reputation for excellence, and are one of the reasons so many families have made their home here. Larchmont and neighboring New Rochelle are home to a large population of French expatriates and emigrants, so the French flair you'll notice in shops and patisseries is an authentic one.

The shoreline of Long Island Sound makes boating a popular pastime; the private Larchmont Shore Club shares the waterfront with beautiful—and open to the public—Manor Park. On 13 acres with 5,000 feet of shoreline along the Long Island Sound and Larchmont Harbor, the park features carved-rock benches, marine wildlife, gazebos, walking paths and unforgettable sunset views. Residents visit often for a stroll, a dog-walk, a jog, or just to relax, socialize and watch the sailboats bobbing in the harbor.

Larchmont is a 40 minute commute to Grand Central Station via the New Haven Line of the Metro-North Railroad.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and 1960s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
