Hartsdale Real Estate

Picture of Hartsdale

Located just 20 miles north of New York City in the town of Greenburgh, the hamlet of Hartsdale is bordered by Elmsford to the north, Greenville to the south, White Plains and Scarsdale to the East and Ardsley to the west.

Hartsdale is popular with commuters for its convenience to New York City (commute time is just over 30 minutes by rail). Among the tree-lined streets and well-kept lawns of its many residential areas including Manor Park, Windsor Park, Poet's Corners, Ridge Road, Orchard Hill and College Corners you'll find a mix of Tudors, Cape Cods, ranches and colonials as well as mid-20th-century homes, in addition to several newer condominium developments. In the charming Poets Corner neighborhood, quiet suburban streets are named Poe, Keats, Longfellow, and Chaucer.

On picturesque East Hartsdale Avenue, anchored by the Hartsdale Metro-North station, you'll find a handful of restaurants, small boutiques and cafes. Busier strip malls along Central Avenue offer more dining options and popular chain stores. Hartsdale is home to a diverse range of ethnic groups. A large Japanese population has established Japanese shops, restaurants and markets in the downtown area near East Hartsdale Avenue.

Hartsdale is credited with contributing to the birth of television: On February 9, 1928, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird transmitted the world's first inter-continental short-wave television signal from a transmitter in a suburb of London to a colleague at the home of Robert M. Hart, an amateur radio operator in Hartsdale. Hartsdale is also the home of the first Carvel ice cream store, though it closed in 2008.

Hartsdale offers several parks, including the 25-acre Secor Woods Park, the 170-acre Ridge Road Park, and 86-acre Rumbrook Park.

Hartsdale is served by the Metro-North commuter rail on the Harlem line into Grand Central Terminal from Hartsdale station. Built in 1914, the Tudor Revival-style rail station building of brick, stucco and timber is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and 1960s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
