Located within the town of Greenburgh, the village of Elmsford is located halfway between Tarrytown to the west and White Plains to the east—residents have the advantage of the many cultural, dining and recreational offerings of both. Covering just over one square mile, tiny Elmsford's best attribute may be its location at the nexus of several major highways including I-287, the Saw Mill River Parkway, the Sprain Brook Parkway, Route 9A (Saw Mill River Road), and Route 119 (Tarrytown Road), making it convenient to nearby White Plains, Yonkers, New York City and Connecticut. Housing stock in Elmsford is as varied and diverse as its population. A school system that has successfully implemented a number of recent improvements in addition to more affordable home prices and lower property taxes than those in surrounding communities, and proximity to White Plains, are some of the factors that have led to a recent surge in Elmsford's residential population.

The North County Trailway and South County Trailway bicycle paths terminate in Elmsford, and Carol Nichols Park offers facilities for baseball, softball, basketball and tennis as well as a children's park. The nearest Metro-North rail station is in neighboring White Plains.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and 1960s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here.
