Dobbs Ferry Real Estate

Picture of Dobbs Ferry

Located within the town of Greenburgh, the village of Dobbs Ferry is bounded by the Hudson River to the west, Saw Mill Parkway and the village of Ardsley on the east, Hastings-on-Hudson to the south and Irvington to the north. The village is named after the ferry service that operated on the Hudson River during the second half of the 19th century. Dobbs Ferry is noted in Revolutionary War history for being the site of George Washington's strategic encampment while waiting for reinforcements prior to the decisive Siege of Yorktown in Virginia.

One of Westchester's River Towns' the villages at the base of the high, wooded hills that overlook the Hudson River, sometimes referred to as the "gateway to the Hudson Valley" Dobbs Ferry is a quiet, picturesque haven with a short (40 minutes by train during peak hours) commute to New York City. Most homes here are two- or single-family and range from mid-century split-levels to historic Victorians and newer colonials to large estates surrounding country clubs at the outer edges of the village. There are a few condos, too, including Livingston Ridge, a luxury development on the waterfront.

A small, bustling "downtown" business district offers local boutiques, art galleries, cafes and restaurants surrounded by tree-lined streets rather than chain stores. A burgeoning restaurant scene has emerged here in recent years; Dobbs Ferry has a reputation for being a dining mecca of sorts, bringing foodies from throughout the county and beyond to popular establishments. A mixed-use retail complex, Rivertowns Square, which will feature residences, a hotel, shopping and an eight-screen Sundance Cinema movie theater, is in the planning stages. Dobbs Ferry is home to an active arts community; Plotkin Gallery features the work of national and international artists, and free weekly waterfront jazz concerts enliven summer months. In addition to the village public schools, there are several private schools and colleges in Dobbs Ferry, including The Masters School and Mercy College.

Like many of Westchester's small suburban communities, Dobbs Ferry is a great choice for families. Village schools are excellent and innovative, the crime rate is very low, the pace is anything but frenetic and frequent community events and activities are decidedly kid-centric. Dobbs Ferry has a reputation for having a welcoming atmosphere in contrast to the exclusivity of some Westchester communities.

The area's natural resources are many, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy them, including Gould Park, Memorial Park and Waterfront Park, which features a marina along the Hudson. The River Towns are connected by the Old Croton Aqueduct, which provides a great opportunity to explore multiple villages, scenic areas, and historic sites on foot or by bike. The South County Bike Trail, built over the Old Putnam railway line, is easily accessible from the Saw Mill River Parkway.

By car, the drive from Dobbs Ferry to Midtown Manhattan south on the Saw Mill River and Henry Hudson Parkways takes 35 minutes in light traffic. The Metro-North Railroad (Hudson Line) stops at the Dobbs Ferry station.

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and 60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
