Brinton Brook Sanctuary offers three miles of hiking trails that connect to the Highland Trail, part of the Croton-on-Hudson village trail system. The Highland Trail circles the Hudson National Golf Club and continues to the northeast offering Hudson River views. A two-mile hike will bring you to the Lytle Arboretum further to the northeast. There are two entrances off Route 9A, north of Croton.

Nestled at the end of a tree-lined country road within minutes of the center of town, the Chappaqua Swim and Tennis Club is a private, family-friendly summer club. Programs include swimming lessons and competitions as well as tennis clinics and tournaments in addition to events like an annual ice cream social and 4th of July party.


 

Choate Sanctuary

The heirs of Joseph H. Choate, Jr. gave 23 acres to the New Castle Land Conservancy in 1972 in memory of their father. Three additional acres were added to the sanctuary in 1974 by Geoffrey Platt, husband of Helen Choate Platt, in her memory. In 1975, the New Castle Land Conservancy and Saw Mill River Audubon merged. Since then, Saw Mill River Audubon has managed Choate Sanctuary as a wildlife refuge with passive recreation use through hiking trails. In 1997, approximately four acres were added to the northern part of the sanctuary under a 99-year lease from the Town of New Castle. Highlights of Choate Sanctuary are the many unusual and dramatic rock outcroppings and the mature forest with large tulip trees, red oak and red maple. Choate Sanctuary is a good place to enjoy hiking, birding, and quiet views over the surrounding woodland. Dogs are permitted on leashes.

Graff Sanctuary

Graff Sanctuary is a protected woodland ridge overlooking the Hudson River. Graff Sanctuary's 30 acres were donated by Howard Graff to the National Audubon Society in 1975. Highlights of Graff Sanctuary are the mature forest with large tulip trees and sugar maples. Graff Sanctuary is on Furnace Dock Road, west of Route 9A and north of the Village of Croton-on-Hudson.


 

Haas Sanctuary

In 2007, Haas Sanctuary doubled in size from seven acres to over 14 acres. Highlights include beautiful rock formations, large tulip and sugar maple trees, and a native meadow along Sheather Road. The Haas Sanctuary borders Sheather Road and Tripp Street in the Town of New Castle.

Pinecliff Sanctuary

Pinecliff Sanctuary offers a quarter mile wheelchair accessible boardwalk over and around a red maple swamp. Pinecliff Sanctuary was first protected by the New Castle Land Conservancy. Pinecliff Sanctuary's boardwalk was built to the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The boardwalk offers several overlooks from which to observe the wetland wildlife, and boardwalk benches are a great place to enjoy a morning cup of coffee. An additional short woodland trail connects to the boardwalk loop and circles the ridge between the sanctuary and the Saw Mill River Parkway. Pinecliff Sanctuary is at the end of Pinecliff Road outside of Chappaqua, in the town of New Castle.


 

Pruyn Sanctuary

Pruyn Sanctuary is the headquarters of Saw Mill River Audubon. The most popular sanctuary feature is a small butterfly and hummingbird garden open to the public. The best time to view butterflies and hummingbirds is on a warm, sunny summer day around noon. Pruyn Sanctuary protects Gedney Swamp, a state designated wetland. The sanctuary interior features over 40 acres of red maple swamp, tussock sedge meadows and shrub swamp. The garden and office entrance to Pruyn Sanctuary is located at 275 Millwood Road (Route 133) about 1.5 miles east of Millwood.
