East Harlem

Neighborhood Guide

A historically Italian turned Latin American neighborhood, “El Barrio,” as it’s affectionately called, celebrates its heritage in a vibrant community stretching from Central Park to the East River. Spanish, Mexican, and Cuban restaurants mingle with age-old legends like Rao’s, where you quite literally need to know somebody to get in, and the original Patsy’s Pizzeria, dating to 1933. El Museo Del Barrio not only has exhibitions and collections of the Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American art but also one of the oldest theatres in Harlem, it’s steps from The Africa Center and The Museum of the City of New York, and the Central Park Conservatory’s trio of formal gardens (French, English, and Italian).
