Jamaica Real Estate

Picture of Jamaica

Jamaica, NY, in the borough and county of Queens, is a unique urban retail destination, a bustling crossroads of transportation routes and a neighborhood name that is often a stand-in for the many neighborhoods of southeast Queens.

Some locals group Jamaica's surrounding neighborhoods, including Briarwood, Jamaica Hills, Jamaica Estates, Holliswood, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, St. Albans, Rosedale, Springfield Gardens, Hollis, Laurelton, Cambria Heights, Queens Village, Howard Beach and Ozone Park, into an unofficial "greater Jamaica."

Several colleges and universities make their home in Jamaica, most notably York College, and St. John's University (Queens Campus). One of Jamaica's loveliest sections is Jamaica Hills, near St. John's University, north of Hillside Avenue. Jamaica Estates, located east and southeast of the university and north of Hillside Avenue and west of 188th Street is a picturesque neighborhood of charming historic Tudors and sprawling newer mansions.

Across Hillside Avenue is "Jamaica Proper". Several important neighborhood additions include the creation of the Sutphin Boulevard transit hub, Jamaica Station, completed in 2003. Jamaica Station is the busiest transportation hub in Queens and all of Long Island. The hub also provides connections to the city's subway lines at the Sutphin Blvd / Archer Ave / JFK Airport stop. This station connects travelers to the E line as well as the J and Z lines through Queens into Brooklyn and Manhattan. There are also connections to JFK airport via the AirTran which was completed in 2006. The Airtran station remains a symbol of ongoing economic progress.

In 2007 the city council adopted a proposal to establish a special Downtown Jamaica District and rezone many of the neighborhood's blocks in order to address current and future housing and economic needs. Looking toward the future, following the examples of major redevelopment that has transformed Long Island City, Flushing, and Downtown Brooklyn, Jamaica has great potential to be a top New York City business center.

Just uphill from "The Ave" (Jamaica Avenue), on the border between manicured, suburban Kew Gardens and bustling, urban Jamaica, Briarwood was developed in the 1920s, in part to provide homes for United Nations employees. Briarwood meets Jamaica Hills to the east at 164th Street, and Kew Gardens to the west at Queens Boulevard/Van Wyck.

Briarwood is known by some as a hidden treasure of a Queens neighborhood. Convenient to highways, the subway and the LIRR and convenient to shopping on Queens boulevard and nearby Union Turnpike, the neighborhood is home to families who come for the tree-lined, quiet streets and schools. Housing is a mix of single- and multi-family houses and apartment buildings. Some Briarwood blocks have a genuine suburban feel.

The neighborhood's main shopping streets are Parsons Boulevard just south of the Grand Central and Queens Boulevard between Main Street and Hillside Avenue. Forest Hills is only a few train stops away, and the online grocery service Fresh Direct delivers to the neighborhood.

Briarwood's proximity to so many transportation options is one of its strongest selling points. The express F subway stops at Hillside and Parsons, again at Hillside and Sutphin, and at the Van Wyck/Briarwood station at Queens Boulevard and Main Street (25 minutes to Lexington Avenue in Manhattan). The E train stops at the Van Wyck station late at night and on weekends. The LIRR stations in downtown Jamaica and Kew Gardens are a 20 minute walk away. Briarwood is right off the Grand Central Parkway, the Van Wyck Expressway, and the Jackie Robinson Expressway (Interboro), and just down Main Street from the Long Island Expressway (L.I.E.). JFK Airport is fewer than 10 minutes away by car.
