BLT Prime

111 East 22nd Street
New York City, NY 10010
212.995.8500
http://www.bltprime.com

As with chef Laurent Tourondel's other BLT favorites–BLT Burger, BLT Market and BLT Fish, to name a few–BLT Prime honors all ingredients artisanal, fresh and farm-grown. At this comfortable, modern Gramercy dining room, the one-man restaurant-brand dynamo does beef to perfection–as evidenced in a glass-fronted 30-foot dry-aging room on the premises. A solid wine list adds to the experience, but the steak, brisket and other carnivore's delights are the stars here.

Coffee Shop

29 Union Square
New York City, NY 10003
212.243.7969

Coffee Shop helped make Union Square what it is today. Years and years ago a lowly diner, this restaurant jazzed up its menu and hired a beautiful staff. Despite all its years, it’s still a place to be seen.

Matsuri

Maritime Hotel, 369 West 16th Street
New York City, NY 10011
212.243.6400
http://www.themaritimehotel.com/matsuri.html

Located in the lobby of the trendy Maritime Hotel, sometimes the party-hearty attitude becomes the main attraction. That's a shame, since the sashimi is among the best in the city. Hidden behind an inauspicious red door, this is a fabulous spot for a great dinner and a festive time.

Old Town Bar

45 East 18th Street
New York City, NY 10003
212.529.6732
http://www.oldtownbar.com

This old pub is such an essential part of New York culture that it was once featured in the opening sequence of David Letterman. It's still the same as it was two generations ago down to the huge wooden bar and the tin ceilings. The beer and drink selections are quite limited, but the historic atmosphere, good basic burgers and other traditional grub continue to make it a local favorite.

Olives, W Hotel

201 Park Avenue South
New York City, NY 10003
212.353.8345
http://www.toddenglish.com

Not to be confused with its late-night Underbar sibling in the same hotel, this chic little lobby bar offers cushy seating, interesting martinis and caters to a youngish professional crowd. The location right off of the Union Square Park is hard to beat.

Otto

1 Fifth Avenue
New York City, NY 10003
212.995.9559
http://www.ottopizzeria.com

This crowded higher-end Italian is known for its thin crust pizzas and long waits for a table. While many adore the pizza, others are done in for their decadent desserts. For what it's worth, Time Out gave them a special critics' award for outstanding cuisine.

Republic

37 Union Square East
New York City, NY 10003
212.627.7172

Cheap prices and a sleek interior are just part of the story. For people looking for something slightly different in the usual Chinese, this is the place. Noodle soups and rice dishes are a step beyond the pale. A popular place for everyone from college kids to models from the nearby photo district.

Union Square Café

21 East 16th Street
New York City, NY 10003
212.243.4020
http://www.unionsquarecafe.com

The "other" upscale American hot spot. Slightly more casual than Gramercy Tavern, the menu features innovative American cuisine several notches above extraordinary. The portions are large, the service excellent and the 13-page wine list dizzying. French fries and desserts are always a must. Union Square Café has been at the top of their game for over 20 years.

Veritas

43 East 20th Street
New York City, NY 10003
212.353.3700
http://veritas-nyc.com

Thousands and thousands upon thousands of bottles of wine. Really. Veritas claims to have over 3,000 wines available for your sipping pleasure. Many of them are also available by the glass. If that's not enough to get you going, you can also sample Chef Scott Bryan's awesome dishes. A gourmand's dream.
