Wantagh Real Estate

With the waters of the East Bay forming its southern border, the hamlet of Wantagh in Nassau County, New York on the South Shore of Long Island is bordered by North Bellmore and Bellmore to the west, North Wantagh to the north and Massapequa and Seaford to the east. Named in 1647 for the chief of the Merokee tribe, Wantagh is known as the gateway to Jones Beach, the most popular beach on Long Island. More than just a stop on the way to the beach, this hamlet of nearly 19,000 residents and covering about four square miles offers orderly streets with well-tended homes, green lawns and gardens while maintaining the advantage of close proximity to several major roadways and the Long Island Rail Road. You'll find mostly well-maintained older homes here, including colonials, ranches, Capes, split levels and some bungalows in family-friendly neighborhoods like Forest City. Large newer homes can be found in areas like Mandalay that offer water views.

Like many South Shore communities, Wantagh offers a rare mix of white sand beaches and protected park land. The aforementioned Jones Beach is about a 10-minute drive, with six miles of Atlantic beachfront, two miles of boardwalk and a four-mile bike path, plus picnic areas, swimming pools, concession stands, a restaurant, miniature golf, ballfields, basketball courts, a roller skating rink, playground, beach volleyball, historic art deco buildings and the Jones Beach Theater (a popular destination for summer concerts). Along the same route is Ocean Parkway, which extends to Captree State Park in Suffolk County. Mill Pond and Wantagh Park provide even more recreation space for residents.

Nightlife thrives in this suburban outpost especially near the commuter rail station with popular bars like Mulcahy's leading the way. The town's many community events include the Spring Fun Hunt, A Taste of Wantagh and the annual winter holiday lighting ceremony.

Wantagh is flanked by a network of key roadways, with Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway running east-west to meet the Southern State Parkway. The Wantagh State Parkway and the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway are the main north-south highways. On the Long Island Rail Road, commuting to Manhattan from the Wantagh station on the Babylon branch takes about 45 minutes. John F. Kennedy International Airport is within 15 miles.
