Shoreham Real Estate

Wedged between Rocky Point, East Shoreham and the vast Rocky Point State Pine Barrens Preserve, with the Long Island Sound as its northern boundary, the village of Shoreham, NY is in the town of Brookhaven on the island's North Shore. Shoreham Village and East Shoreham share a post office and a zip code; most people refer to East Shoreham as Shoreham.

With a population of only around 531, this quiet waterfront village is home to both residents who commute to New York City for work and those who are affiliated with the nearby Brookhaven Laboratory or the State University of New York at Stony Brook in addition to retirees and students. The village has a reputation for being home to both academics and a number of very wealthy residents while maintaining a low-key, small-town vibe. Life here often involves time spent relaxing on the village residents' country club deck or enjoying life at home among hills and tree-shaded streets. Homes here include older houses with well-tended lawns, smaller ranch homes and modernist houses on wooded ravines. Shoreham is served by the Shoreham-Wading River School District's three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. With only about 15 students per teacher on average, Shoreham schools have a reputation for excellence.

While the village itself is purely residential, nearby towns and villages like Port Jefferson and Wading River provide plenty of fine dining options as well as entertainment, arts, culture and shopping. The Long Island Sound offers plenty of waterfront activities. Shoreham is family-friendly, and local youngsters enjoy nearby amusement parks like Splish Splash in Riverhead as well as local tennis and paddle tennis courts. Older kids head to public and private beaches for jet-skiing, boating and swimming.

Shoreham is an all-American town, fiercely patriotic and friendly. A highly-anticipated event in Shoreham is the annual Fourth of July celebration with its local parade, a speech by the mayor and hot dogs and soda for all; children win awards for decorating their bikes.

The nearest Long Island Rail Road commuter rail stations are at Port Jefferson and Medford. The nearest Amtrak station is 21 miles away in Bridgeport, CT; a ferry travels across Long Island Sound to Port Jefferson. New York City is about 60 miles away, about one hour and 15 minutes by car or rail. Shoreham is also served by two nearby airports, Long Island Macarthur Airport in Islip, NY and Tweed New Haven Regional Airport in New Haven, CT.
