Seaford Real Estate

The community of Seaford in the town of Hempstead is located on the South Shore of Long Island, about 25 miles east of Manhattan. Seaford is bordered by Massapequa and Amityville to the east and Wantagh and Bellmore to the west. The East Bay and South Oyster Bay lie to the south with Jones Beach and the Atlantic Ocean just beyond.

South Shore communities are built along protected wetlands and white sand beaches fronting on the Atlantic Ocean and Outer Barrier Islands. Like its South Shore neighbors Wantagh, Merrick and Bellmore, Seaford offers a wholesome suburban setting mixed with the natural beauty of a Long Island waterfront community. Like many South Shore towns, Seaford is easily accessible via the Long Island Railroad.

Mostly an agricultural area throughout the 19th century, the town formerly known as Jerusalem South was also a country haven for New York City residents. When Sunrise Highway was completed in 1929, the town's population grew and would triple over the following 25 years. Because of the community's waterfront access, fishing and oystering became top industries during that time. The popularity of sport fishing and waterfowl hunting brought sportsmen including celebrities like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig as well, and several hotels were built to accommodate them.

A genuinely unpretentious, relaxed atmosphere and a reputation for community spirit make Seaford a good choice for families. Home sizes, styles and prices vary widely. In addition to spacious single-family houses there are rental options in apartment buildings and in multi-family homes.

Residents can choose from a variety of local restaurants, shops and other amenities. Seaford's 259-acre Cedar Creek Park offers tennis courts, ball fields, jogging and bike paths and a playground that was chosen as the best playground on Long Island by the Long Island Press. The Long Island Growers' Association recently began a Saturday farmers' market, held at the Seaford train station from June through September.

Nearby South Shore attractions include Long Beach and the Robert Moses-designed Jones Beach State Park, Belmont Park Race Track, Adelphi and Hofstra Universities, Valley Stream and Hempstead Lake State Parks and a waterfront park in Baldwin. The annual Bellmore Street Festival is a highlight of the fall season.

John F. Kennedy International Airport is within 15 miles. The Long Island Rail Road stops at the Seaford station. Major thoroughfares include Sunrise Highway, Southern State Parkway and Merrick Road.
