Rocky Point Real Estate

The hamlet of Rocky Point, NY is in the town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County on the North Shore of Long Island. Neighboring villages and hamlets include Miller Place, Shoreham, Middle Island and Ridge, with the Long Island Sound forming the hamlet's northern border.

The beaches, natural resources and delicate ecology of the area have long been protected by residents and the state government. A large portion of the hamlet is covered by the vast woodland of the 100,000 acre Rocky Point State Pine Barrens Preserve, a part of the New York State Central Pine Barrens. This region is the largest remnant of a forest thought to have once encompassed over a quarter million acres. The Central Pine Barrens overlies a portion of Long Island's federally-designated sole source drinking water aquifer and is important as a complex of relatively undeveloped pine barrens forest and wetlands containing regionally rare wetland and upland communities and supporting the highest diversity of rare species in New York State.

More historic significance: The Rocky Point area is home to the site where the American radio company RCA operated a large transatlantic transmitting and research facility known as Radio Central. When it opened on November 5, 1921, RCA Radio Central at Rocky Point was considered the world's largest and most powerful wireless transmitting station. In the 1970s, the 5,200 acre Rocky Point site was demolished and now consists of concrete ruins and downed telephone poles and radio towers that can still be seen by hikers in the area's wooded hills. Rocky Point is also the site of the inventor and scientist Nikola Tesla's early research facilities.

Rocky Point is the kind of small Long Island community that has remained relatively unchanged throughout the decades. The proximity of the sound it can be seen from almost anywhere in the hilly hamlet and a less-congested feel make it a great choice for anyone seeking a peaceful, quiet hometown. Though many of the North Shore's more popular destinations are only a short drive away as are the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the adjoining Stony Brook University Hospital, Rocky Point feels remote and uninhabited in spots, unspoiled and relatively untouched by time, with winding country roads that end in steep hills with the lights of Connecticut visible across the sound.

Rocky beaches, small communities of bungalows that were built as vacation homes in the early part of the 20th century many have been renovated to suit modern village life as well as older Victorian houses are among the many home choices here. Shopping and local amenities in the form of mom-and-pop businesses, diners and cafes can be found on Route 25A (Broadway) but the small-town vibe is unbroken by chain stores or mall parking lots.

The nearest Long Island Rail Road commuter rail stations are at Port Jefferson and Medford. The nearest Amtrak station is 21 miles away in Bridgeport, CT; a ferry travels across Long Island Sound to Port Jefferson. New York City is about 60 miles away, about one hour and 15 minutes by car or rail. Rocky Point is also served by two nearby airports, Long Island Macarthur Airport in Islip, NY and Tweed New Haven Regional Airport in New Haven, CT.
