Kings Point Real Estate

The waterfront village of Kings Point in the town of North Hempstead occupies the northernmost part of the Great Neck peninsula, a sliver of land between Little Neck and Manhasset bays on the near North Shore of Long Island. Kings Point is one of a handful of villages referred to collectively as Great Neck. Like many of its neighbors, Kings Point offers the advantages of being a suburban area and close to New York City while maintaining the atmosphere of a quiet, rural village that values privacy and a very high quality of life.

This idyllic village on the Gold Coast of Long Island Sound has historically been the site of some of Long Island's most expensive real estate. By the 1920s, Kings Point and the surrounding area had become a glittering country escape for wealthy New Yorkers. So lush were its surroundings and so lavish the lifestyle of its residents that author F. Scott Fitzgerald, who lived in neighboring Great Neck Estates, is said to have modeled the opulent West Egg after the village of Kings Point in The Great Gatsby. Decades later, its population quadrupled and Great Neck became a suburban haven with many of the area's palatial estates subdivided for private homes.

Kings Point and surrounding Great Neck neighborhoods are still home to many large, opulent mansions both old and new including sprawling contemporary homes with luxurious modern additions built on the grounds of former estates but there are many housing options available, and the neighborhood attracts a broad range of professionals and families. Like many of its neighbors, a significant number of Kings Point residents especially those living along the water in homes along private roads belong to individual neighborhood associations that offer amenities like private pools, bath houses, docks and boat slips along the Long Island Sound. Membership in the Wildwood Pool and Tennis Club is available to non-residents as well as residents. Kings Point is within the Great Neck Park District one of only a few park districts in the state which uses community resources to offer playing fields, parks and a cultural center. Neighborhood parks include the 13-acre Steppingstone Park which offers a marina with mooring for over 300 boats as well as the Steppingstone Waterside Theater. The heavily-wooded 175-acre Kings Point Park offers tennis courts, ball fields, playgrounds, a sled hill and a cross country ski area. Kings Point is also home to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

There are few or no commercial establishments within Kings Point, but there are plenty of shopping and entertainment options in the nearby village of Great Neck; the Manhasset Miracle Mile shopping center is about 15 minutes away. Manhattan is just 25 minutes from the Great Neck station on the Long Island Railroad, and, as Fitzgerald put it in Gatsby, not much longer by Rolls-Royce.
