Ocean Beach, Fire Island

Ocean Beach, NY 11770

Ocean Beach on Fire Island—just an hour from Manhattan is one of Long Island’s most popular getaway spots. This seaside resort is considered the hub of western Fire Island. Its beaches rank among the world’s finest. Getting around this small community means walking to small shops, ice cream parlors, and beaches. In addition to relatively uncrowded beaches, Ocean Beach also offers plenty of options for restaurants and nightlife.

Sunken Forest, Fire Island

Bay Shore, NY 11706
http://www.nps.gov/archive/fiis/SunkenForestTour.htm

Even if the nightlife of Fire Island Pines and Ocean Beach isn’t your cup of tea, you may find the Sunken Forest, one of the few maritime forests left on the eastern seaboard, a great way to get lost in the wild. Maintained by The Fire Island National Seashore, Sunken Forest appears lower than the surrounding water, though it is not actually below sea level; the high dunes merely create this illusion in an amazing canopied 40-acre wilderness with miles of boardwalks twisting through it. Hikers, bird watchers and ecologists will find an astounding degree of diversity of flora and wildlife in the many ecosystems that still exist here.
