Garden City Real Estate

In 1869, Scottish millionaire Alexander Stewart established this village as an upscale escape from the crowds and noise of New York City. It has remained an upscale escape to this day, home of some of Long Island's wealthiest families. Notables who have called Garden City home include Nobel Prize winner Steven Chu, Nelson DeMille, Bill Moyers and Joe Namath.

An independent, incorporated village, Garden City has its own school district, fire and police departments. Nearly 25,000 people live in the village, with a median household income of over $160,000. Located in west central Long Island, Garden City has no beachfront property, but beaches on the north and south coasts are within an easy drive.

Upscale shops and fine dining are available in the village, with Roosevelt Field Shopping Mall -- one of the largest in the world -- just east of the village proper. Cultural activities include Adelphi university, the Long Island Children's Museum and a variety of art galleries. New York City's cultural offerings are less than 20 miles east, served by the Long Island Rail Line and the Long Island Expressway. Local parks and recreation programs offer sports facilities and swimming, along with a robust schedule of classes and activities.
