Freeport Real Estate

The waterfront village of Freeport on Long Island's South Shore is a suburban community, but its waterfront Nautical Mile, bustling commercial areas and diverse population set it apart from many of its Nassau County neighbors. Neighboring villages include Baldwin, Merrick and Roosevelt. Freeport's southern boundary is comprised of salt flats and bays, with its southern portion laced with canals that allow access to the Atlantic Ocean.

First settled in the 1640s, Freeport was once an oystering community. By the early 20th century the village had become a theatrical actors' enclave of sorts, with many of the era's top vaudeville performers making it their summer or year-round home base. After World War II the village became a bedroom community for commuters who worked in New York City. Today's Freeport boasts an attractive, architecturally interesting downtown district, the popular Nautical Mile, an affordable waterfront area, easy highway and commuter rail access, a large recreation center, bustling commercial districts, beautiful Victorian houses and quiet tree lined streets. The village also provides its own utility services, keeping costs for residents low.

Freeport's Nautical Mile runs along the west side of Woodcleft Canal, attracting visitors and residents alike for its scenic pier, popular seafood restaurants, quaint crab shacks, bars, eclectic shops and fresh fish markets among the party cruise ships and casino boats moored along the canals.

Freeport is a Long Island summertime hot spot for New Yorkers. A festival on the Nautical Mile on the first weekend of June kicks off the season each year. Freeport is also a gateway to Jones Beach, one of the state's largest beaches.

Homes here include styles ranging from older colonials and Victorians in the village's central area to Cape Cods, bungalows and ranches and beach houses directly on and near the water. You'll find condos, co-ops and rentals here as well, including Anchorage at Freeport, a gated co-op complex, and the 152-unit Wharfside Condominiums.

Freeport schools are one of the community's selling points. A science research program run in cooperation with the State University of New York at Stony Brook is one of many unique programs in the district. Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road are busy shopping strips including a shopping mall, Meadowbrook Commons, and there are more shops on Main Street. There are four village parks. The Freeport Recreation Center features a year-round ice skating rink, indoor and outdoor pools, fully equipped fitness centers, basketball courts, snack bars and various programs for adults and children.

New York State Route 27 (Sunrise Highway) runs through Freeport, and Meadowbrook Parkway runs along its eastern boundary. Freeport has a station on the Long Island Rail Road; it's about 45 minutes to Manhattan by rail.
