Fair Harbor Real Estate

The seasonal beach community of Fair Harbor, NY lies near the western end of Fire Island between the Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Fire Island neighbors include the village of Saltaire and the beach communities of Dunewood and Lonelyville. Fair Harbor is reachable by ferry from Bay Shore, a six-mile trip across the bay.

Though it is part of the town of Islip in Suffolk County, Long Island, the similarities between this one-mile-square beach community and the mainland of Long Island's South Shore are few. Like most Fire Island communities, Fair Harbor is mainly a summer community its population grows to 1,500 in season though a few hardy residents live here year-round. Children attend the Fire Island School District in Corneille Estates until grade six, when they are bussed to public schools in Bay Shore or Islip. There is limited car access to and on Fire Island; biking and walking are the chosen modes of transportation.

This idyllic seaside community has a well-deserved reputation as a perfect getaway. On summer weekends, ferries full of harried city folk disembark to enjoy a rare opportunity to relax. Though big-city gourmet necessities are readily available at the hamlet's one grocery market, activities in Fair Harbor center around enjoying the sand, surf and the company of family and friends. Unlike some of Fire Island's popular party and resort communities, Fair Harbor is geared toward families; babies, children and pets can be seen frolicking everywhere.

In addition to Corliss by the Bay a general store that stocks everything from hardware and paint to clothing and the aforementioned grocery store, there is one restaurant (which also features takeout pizza). There aren't any bars, though there is a wine and liquor store. The Sixish is a local tradition: Everyone who's in town young and old alike heads to the docks each evening to watch the sunset and socialize. A kids' movie night happens every Wednesday in season at the local firehouse.

Many of the homes here have been in the same families for generations. Though there are some newly-constructed homes, most of the hamlet's houses were built in the 1970's, with a few dating back to the 40's. The seasonal rental market is strong; occasionally homes come up for sale.

The ferry dock in Bay Shore is about 47 miles (about one hour and 15 minutes) from New York City by car, about 80 minutes by Long Island Rail Road. From there it's a 30 minute trip on the ferry.
