East Setauket Real Estate

The hamlet of East Setauket, NY, is in the Suffolk County town of Brookhaven on the North Shore of Long Island. East Setauket and the neighboring hamlet of Setauket are referred to as "the Setaukets" and make up the area between Stony Brook and Port Jefferson Harbor. The Setaukets are, along with the Stony Brook neighborhoods, part of the popular Three Village district of Brookhaven, served by the Three Village Central School District which is known for its three-year science research program and its program for intellectually gifted students. This modest-sized coastal community lies on Long Island's idyllic Gold Coast region. The Setaukets are largely residential, with restaurants and shopping concentrated along Route 25A.

The nearby village of Old Field is home to grand waterfront estates bordering Long Island Sound, many of which were built in the mid-1900s. The Setaukets, too, are filled with history: A New England-style village green boasts a mill pond, a post office, a church built in 1729 and another established in 1660 in addition to the Emma S. Clark Library, one of Long island's finest.

The aforementioned Setauket Mill Pond part of the historic Frank Melville Memorial Park is home to ducks, geese and swans and is stocked with bass. The park offers walking trails on a 20-acre sanctuary and a five-acre arboretum. Residents also enjoy views of Conscience Bay and Setauket Harbor and a public beach in nearby Stony Brook. The members-only St. George's Golf and Country Club in East Setauket offers an 18-hole golf course.

This quiet community is popular with families looking for a convenient commute to the big city and nearby amenities while enjoying quiet village life. Both property values and the median income of residents remain high, making the Setaukets one of the most expensive and desirable real estate markets in the country. The State University of New York at Stony Brook and the adjoining Stony Brook University Hospital are top employers in the area. The university's 1,200-acre campus abuts the Setaukets.

Although the Setaukets are quiet, area dining, nightlife, shopping and cultural options are many given the hamlets' proximity to neighboring towns like Smithtown and Port Jefferson. The Smith Haven Mall, which has nearly 1.4 million square feet of retail space and more than 160 stores, is about three miles west on Route 347. And for work or play, New York City is just an hour's drive away.
