5 Tips That Will Make You Ace a Co-op Board Interview

You’ve finally found the home of your dreams. Now, the one thing that stands between you and your perfect apartment: the co-op board. Though a co-op board interview can be intimidating, use these simple tips and tricks to impress the board and get approval for your new home.

1. Make a good first impression.

This point may seem obvious, but it must be said. Arrive on time, or better yet, a few minutes early. You don’t want to keep the board waiting for you, and the extra time allows you to settle in and mentally prepare before the interview takes place.

Business casual dress is a safe bet. A full suit is probably not necessary, but you do want to present a polished, professional persona.

2. Bring your paperwork.

Though the board will likely have copies of your application and financial information, bring a few extras just in case. It never hurts to be overly prepared.

3. Know your financials in and out.

If you’ve made it to the interview stage, that means that you’re conditionally approved for the apartment based on your financials. The board still, though, has the opportunity to ask you questions about anything included in your application. Make sure you know the details so you can quickly and clearly answer any of their questions.

4. Do an audit of your social media.

Either make your profiles private or delete any posts that you wouldn’t want your employer to see—think of the co-op interview like a job interview in that way. You want to present yourself in the best light so the board is confident that you will be a good neighbor.

5. Talk to your real estate agent.

Your real estate agent will know the ins-and-outs of the interview process and can tell you what to expect. They’ll probably have some insight into what questions are likely to come up, too. Your agent has been with you on the entire journey to find your home, so they’ll be there to help you get through the co-op board interview as well.
