Denise Joseph personifies Brooklyn real estate. She has proven to be a catalyst for tremendous growth while working hard to retain a genuine sense of community. And her leadership in the Brooklyn market has helped Douglas Elliman expand its presence in the borough.
Having earned a Master’s degree in social work from Columbia University, and working several years as a Clinical Specialist with incarcerated teens she pivoted getting her real estate license and joining Douglas Elliman in 2002, where she worked with one of the firm’s Top 1% brokers at its 575 Madison Avenue headquarters.
As she quickly learned the real estate business, Denise found that her training as a therapist gave her a distinct advantage in understanding the needs and motivations of her clients, navigating the emotions that are often involved in buying and selling a home, and providing the straight-talking honesty that has earned her the trust, respect, and admiration of clients and colleagues alike. It also taught her to focus on the needs of each individual, laying the groundwork for her client-focused approach to both sales and management.
Denise’s reputation for inspiring and motivating others to succeed along with her seemingly natural ability to navigate through difficult challenges soon caught the attention of Douglas Elliman executives. And not long after she relocated to the firm’s Park Slope office, to be closer to her home, she was asked to help expand the Fort Greene office. At the time, it was a satellite location with only four agents. But she had a good understanding of what agents want, and what they need, and she quickly put that vision into place.
Denise fostered a culture of collegial entrepreneurship in Fort Greene, creating a tight-knit team of agents eager to grow and make their mark. And though she was officially named manager of the office in 2014 she distanced herself from that title and the baggage it often carries, favoring instead the role of a coach or mentor. Her focus has always been on partnering with her agents, providing not only the support they need but also the individually tailored guidance, resources, and training essential to helping each of them turn their sales efforts into a well-rounded, fully functioning business.
As word spread of the environment and opportunities in the Fort Greene office, Denise found it increasingly easier to recruit talented new agents, particularly those eager to learn, as well as those energized by the office’s eclectic mix of diehard Brooklynites. In doing so, she was able to grow the office to more than 40 agents, a 700% increase in just 3.5 years. And under her guidance, the office has produced consecutive Douglas Elliman “Rookie of the Year” winners, which serves as a testament to her ability to turn talented sales professionals into effective real estate entrepreneurs.
Given her success in Fort Greene, Denise lead the recruiting effort and subsequent acquisition of Brooklyn Hearth Realty in Ditmas Park which opened in 2017, and continues to expand. And her winning blend of leadership, development, and support have already set that office on course to becoming one of the fastest growing in the borough.
As a Brooklyn resident for more than two decades, Denise has an extensive knowledge of the borough and its real estate market. She brings a seasoned personal and professional perspective that has proven useful to the growth of agents as well as the firm itself. And her leadership, commitment, and personal touch have served as an inspiration to her agents and colleagues alike.
