A renaissance in destinations for rest and relaxation is underway in the Hudson River Valley north of New York City.
Long known for the verdant vistas that inspired a school of 19th-century landscape artists and an abundance of 20th-century summer resorts and family camps that inspired a certain nostalgic 1980s blockbuster, the Hudson Valley has enjoyed a resurgence of interest over the past decades from city dwellers drawn by the allure of antiquing, fine dining, hip hotels and second homes.
In recent years, the area has been particularly hospitable to a new generation of spas, bathhouses and other locations promising wellness and serenity in picturesque environs. Here’s a round-up of destinations for protecting your peace in the Lower Hudson Valley, Catskill Mountains and beyond.
Day Spa Options for Pop-in Pampering
The recent opening of the Pocketbook Hudson Hotel and Baths sent a clear signal that NYC’s bathhouse revival had found its way upstate. One reason such watery wellness playgrounds like Bathhouse, AIRE Ancient Baths and Othership Flatiron have flourished is that they promise a pampering experience without committing to an overnight stay. At Pocketbook, in the riverside town of Hudson, access to The Baths is open to both overnight guest of the 46-room boutique hotel (at no additional cost) and day visitors. Formerly the site of the Kadin Brothers Pocketbook Company, the 70,000-square-foot complex also houses a restaurant, galleries and gathering spaces (including a nightclub in an old boiler room). Bathhouse treatments include bodywork, facials, meditation and “an array of consultations in creative, intuitive, and herbal modalities.” Only two hours by train from NYC, Hudson is also packed with design-forward furniture stores, upscale clothing boutiques, book shops and farm-to-table eateries along its main thoroughfare of Warren Street, making it an idea day-trip destination.
Like Hudson to the north, Rhinebeck is day-trip distance from NYC and even more established as a draw for weekend antiquing and dining. The outpost of the Mirbeau Inn & Spa offers day passes to its 12,000-square-foot facility featuring an array of treatments, fitness classes and an Aqua Terrace with cabanas for rent.
Just across the Hudson, on 100 riverfront acres near Kingston’s Rondout Waterfront, is Hutton Brickyards. With 12 luxury rooms in the historic and elegant Edgewood Mansion alongside 31 groovy cabin accommodations, the Brickyards has a sophisticated spa and wellness services featuring guest lecturers, multiday programs and wooden barrel saunas that look out on the water.
Rustic Retreats for Days
For spa enthusiasts looking for extended stays in more rustic environs, Piaule, just outside Catskill, bills itself as a “Landscape Hotel” and features 24 Modernist cabins, all on a wooded hillside and each with an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling glass windows. This not only expands the space but allows for a great view of the mountains. A clubhouse and restaurant are a good 100 yards away. Further into the forest are the spa facilities that promise a hot pool and a mineral plunge, in addition to Piaule’s “circuit of wellness rituals.”
At top left and right, the gym and solarium at The Ranch Hudson Valley; at bottom, The Thistle, An Auberge Spa, at Wildflower Farms.
A similar nature retreat further south is Wildflower Farms, part of the venerable Auberge Collection hospitality brand. Located outside Gardiner, just southwest of New Paltz, the 140-acre property hosts 65 freestanding cabins with expansive windows. Treatments at Thistle, An Auberge Spa, combine “age-old remedies and therapeutic bodywork with the essence of slow wellness and the healing powers of nature.”
Even further south, just over New Jersey’s northern border with New York State, is The Ranch Hudson Valley. Its upscale promise of “east coast ambition meets mindful restoration” offers curated daily programs and signature events, all suggested by your concierge.
