In celebration of Black History Month, Elliman Insider invited Douglas Elliman agents to share their experiences and reflect on the role their identity and heritage have played in their real estate careers.

What aspects of your identity or experience as a Black person are most meaningful for you? Are there traditions or other aspects of your experience that are a particular source of pride?
Loving my identity as an African American is deeply rooted in my parents’ journey as immigrants from Sierra Leone. I carry forward the richness of their culture—its passion, resilience, excellence, and deep sense of love and pride. Embracing African traditions has shaped my confidence and my understanding of self, allowing me to stand out unapologetically while honoring where I come from.
Loving the skin I’m in and staying connected to my roots is not just personal pride—it’s a celebration of heritage, strength, and identity that continues to guide who I am today.
How did find your path to success in this field?
I found my path to success in real estate through relentlessness—by building a network, a tribe, and a community from strangers, and by believing that even small contributions can make the world feel smaller and more connected.
Entering an industry where I didn’t see many people who looked like me pushed me to become the example I was searching for. Early on, I drew inspiration from Ryan Serhant, not because I related to his background, but because I related to his drive.
Over time, I reshaped my own identity—growing more confident as a young man and business professional—and now my purpose is to show my generation that real estate can be classy, professional, and expressive, with style, creativity, and integrity.
Are there values or elements of your identity that you draw strength from in your work as an agent?
I draw strength from consistency and honoring my word. I’m only as credible as what I follow through on. Integrity guides how I operate, especially doing the right thing when it’s difficult and when no one is watching. I stay optimistic and solutions-focused, always finding a way to make things happen for my clients.
What impact, if any, has your identity had on your experience in the real estate industry? Are there specific moments or episodes from over the years that illustrate that experience?
My identity has shaped how I brand myself and how I move through the real estate industry with kindness, compassion, and respect for people first. I know when to be firm and assertive in business, but I do so in a way that protects relationships and long-term reputation. There have been moments where I could have acted out of ego or self-interest, especially when wronged by an agent or client, but choosing the high road and leading by example has consistently given me an edge. That discipline—doing what’s right even when it’s easier not to—has defined my growth and impact in this industry.
What would you like your industry colleagues to understand about your experience as a Black real estate professional?
I would want colleagues to understand the importance of compassion and the willingness to truly seek understanding of those who may not look like you. Respect goes a long way in business, in life, and in an industry that is already challenging to navigate. Creating a positive, respectful, and professional environment benefits Black real estate professionals and all professionals alike. There is more than enough opportunity for everyone, and it’s inspiring to see Black professionals entering this industry and curating excellence, creativity, and impact at a high level.
How do you think brokerages like Elliman can help foster greater diversity and understanding in the industry?
Brokerages like Elliman can foster greater diversity and understanding by continuously bringing recognition to agents who work tirelessly behind the scenes and on the front lines every day. Consistent appreciation, awareness, and acknowledgment—especially for Black agents and those not always publicly highlighted—can make a meaningful impact.
When people feel seen and valued, it strengthens internal culture and inspires the next generation of professionals to join the firm. This reinforces Elliman not only as a pinnacle brand, but as a versatile, elegant, and powerful organization—strengthened by its diversity and respect for agents from all walks of life.
