Yorktown

Picture of Yorktown

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and '60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.

The town of Yorktown, NY, located in northern Westchester at the border between Westchester and Putnam Counties just across the Hudson from West Point, affords residents the benefits of a country setting, wooded hills and lakeside vistas–including over 1,400 acres of town and state parks–and residential neighborhoods as well as the convenience of a downtown shopping center and the nearby Jefferson Valley Mall, all just around 35 miles from New York City. Yorktown contains the hamlets of Crompond, Jefferson Valley, Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, and Yorktown Heights.

Yorktown has a rich history, beginning with the earliest known inhabitants, Mohegan, Osceola, Amawalk, Kitchawan and Mohansic tribes–all familiar names of local places today. The Mohegans of the Algonquin Nation lived within the present-day boundary of Yorktown. Most of Yorktown was part of the Manor of Cortlandt, established by King William III for the Van Cortlandt Family. The township was officially incorporated as Yorktown in 1788 to commemorate the decisive Revolutionary War battle near Yorktown, Virginia. The first Croton Dam on the Croton River, which runs through the southern part of Yorktown, was New York City's first major reliable source of clean water. The dam broke in 1842, causing significant damage to property and major loss of life.

At one time Yorktown had five stations along the New York and Putnam Railroad. The abandoned rail system is now part of North County Trailway bike trail system which runs north as far as Carmel. The nearest MTA Metro North rail stations are Croton-Harmon, Mount Kisco, Pleasantville and Cortlandt, all15-20 minutes away.

The Jefferson Valley Mall offers about 250 stores, including Sears, Macy's, H&M, Forever 21 and Foot Locker as well as a food court. Yorktown is also the home of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, designed by the noted modern architect Eero Saarinen.
