North Salem

Picture of North Salem

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world’s first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and ‘60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today’s Westchester is one of the nation’s most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.

Located in Westchester’s northeast corner, North Salem borders Putnam County, New York to the north and Connecticut to the east. The town includes the hamlets of Croton Falls, Grants Corner, North Salem, Salem Center, Purdys and Twin Lakes Village. North Salem seems almost impossibly remote for being within an hour’s commute to New York City. Stunning vistas appear in every direction (you can see as far as the Catskill foothills in some places), and residents are passionate about keeping them that way–and keeping out shopping malls, housing developments and other signs of suburban sprawl. Instead, this pastoral picture is dotted with horse corrals and grazing cows. Dining options may be somewhat limited here, but many of them are excellent. And it may be said that horses outnumber people, but who could complain about acres of rolling hills and farmland and miles of beautiful riding trails. You might even spot the Goldens Bridge Hunt Club, Westchester’s only remaining fox-hunting club, riding to the hounds across open fields. Old Salem Farm is a nationally-known venue for equestrian competitions, and the North Salem Bridle Trails Association offers miles of picturesque trails for riding. The town has two large lakes, including Peach Lake and Titicus Reservoir, one of New York City's drinking water reservoirs. In the best-of-both-worlds category, just over the Connecticut border from emphatically mall-free North Salem is one of the tri-state area’s favorite shopping centers, Danbury Fair.

Salem Center is the fictional location of the X-Mansion and Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, jointly the headquarters of the Marvel Comics X-Men superhero team. In real life, North Salem is the home of the award-winning North Salem Middle/High School–it received the Federal Government-bestowed Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence, and is one of the highest-ranking public schools in the nation.
