With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world’s first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and ‘60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today’s Westchester is one of the nation’s most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
Located about 45 miles from New York City in northeastern Westchester County, the hamlet of Bedford Hills in the town of Bedford, NY, extends from the business center at the railroad station to the farms and estates to the east along Harris, Babbitt and Bedford Center Roads and south along the Route 117 business corridor up to Mt. Kisco. Bedford Hills is the seat of government of the Town of Bedford. Once the home of dairy farms and vast estates, the peaceful hamlet still attracts those who love the country but don’t want to be too far from the city. Bedford Hills offers residents swimming and tennis, a historic library and locally-owned shops. Strong arts and education communities offer concerts, art museums and galleries, lectures, house and garden tours and family activities. In May 2010, Bedford Hills celebrated its centennial with community events—like a scavenger hunt and a pie baking contest—that reflect the area’s small-town charm. In nearby Mt. Kisco, the Westmoreland Sanctuary, a 625-acre nature preserve with eight miles of hiking trails, offers a variety of organized activities, environmental, and educational programs.
