With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world’s first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and ‘60s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today’s Westchester is one of the nation’s most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
Located about thirty-five miles from Manhattan, Armonk, NY, is a hamlet in the town of North Castle in Westchester County. In the early 19th century, most North Castle residents were farmers, but by mid-century, construction of a railroad brought a shift away from agriculture. In the early 20th century, the purchase of reservoir land and the construction of the Kensico Dam in Valhalla improved the town’s economy dramatically. The use of North Castle granite and the decision by immigrant stone masons who built the dam to settle in the community were major factors in this resurgence.
Today, Armonk is a picturesque community of about 12,000 residents as well as home to the corporate headquarters for IBM. A bustling town center is surrounded by a variety of distinct neighborhoods. A unique location allows easy access to excellent dining and shopping opportunities throughout Westchester County and in Connecticut. North Castle is known for its parks and green spaces and its ability to have retained its historic character while still allowing for development. Residents actively participate in town affairs to ensure an orderly rate of growth while preserving the quality of the environment. Whippoorwill Country Club, one of the country’s best golf courses, is located in Armonk. The annual Armonk Outdoor Art Show is a juried fine art and craft show that, with its attendant fundraisers, draws crowds each year. The town is also known for its recreation programs for children, adults and seniors including an extensive array of courses on fitness, cooking and the arts as well as a variety of youth sports programs like organized baseball and soccer.
