Sheepshead Bay
Sheepshead Bay (named for an edible fish once found here) separates the mainland of Brooklyn from the eastern portion of Coney Island. The neighborhood overlooking the bay began its life as a seaside resort town. Its glamorous roots have been rediscovered with a boom in new developments along the bay waterfront with its beautiful ocean views. This luxury development boom means that available homes here are primarily co-ops or condos, but some rental apartments can be found here as well.
Sheepshead Bay is the rare city neighborhood for people who want to be within close range of untamed nature but also not far away from the amenities of urban life. The neighborhood borders the Gateway National Recreation Area with its bicycle and walking paths, the remains of a historic airport, bird-watching and other outdoor activities. The ocean coastline lies just a quick walk away across a pedestrian bridge to Manhattan Beach. The bay itself is lined with piers where fishing boats, yachts and other vessels are moored. Emmons Avenue, the northern shoreline street along the bay, has a number of active piers, tour boats and a busy seafood market.
Sheepshead Bay is served by the Q and the B subway lines as well as the B4 and B36 MTA buses.
